Without a doubt right now the hardest hitter on tour is Fernando Gonzalez, but before him, and still the second-heaviest hitter, is Thomas Enqvist. I saw him playing the 2003 US Open qualifying and was astonished by how hard he was hitting, even against guys who were trying their best, it seemed, to blast him off the court. Does anyone who attended the qualifying remember Enqvist's matches against Okun and Pavel Slozil? Those guys at some points were hitting as hard as they could against him and Thomas was not only returning their shots with pace, but also with greater depth than them. (Not to mention Enqvist's great form).
My viewpoint on Enqvist's being amongst the top heavy hitters is based on his groundstrokes -- there are guys who have heavier forehands, i.e Moya or Wayne Ferreira, but most guys don't go BIG off BOTH sides on almost EVERY ball. Thomas does that through taking the ball early, good form, and sheer brute force. Just my two cents' worth. |

Flavio Saretta. SO MUCH SPIN and POWER that it's scary, has to be huge. Johannson's shots LOOK huge, so much pace, and probably quite a bit of spin. When I was ballkidding for him, his forehand winners would hit the back wall on one bounce, and that back wall was WAAAAAAAAAAAY back.
Moya's forehand looks huge, he puts so much spin on the ball with that head-heavy racquet, and there is a lot of pace, so it must kick like a mule. |

Enqvist hits a pretty hard ball for shure. Also, Tursunov hits one of the baddest forehands on tour.

If you've ever seen Phillippoussis hit a forehand up close ...

I have a question. How can some of those balls spin that fast??
Like for example. Even @ 1800 rpm's. That's 30 rotations per second. And 15 in half a second. 15 full rotations??? WOW |

Roddick said that Agassi might be the top one if you just consider MPH on the ball.
I think a lot of people hit pretty heavy these days. Gonzalez is definately up there. Federer, Moya, and other spanish guys. |

I have seen flipper's forehand in slow mo, and it looks extremelt heavy, he kind of raises his arm straight sideways with the reacket head parallel to the net then sort of unleashes it as if its spring loaded, btw what grip does he use?

Fernando "Gonzo" Gonzalez for sure. so much pace and power and spin on his shots. its wicked. Its so low percentage though, if he is "on", he cna beat anyone and is a joy to watch, if not he frmaes it and misses like all us rec. players. its a double edged sword, but he is the hardest and heaviest hitter on tour.

Sonic, now Imagine that Bruguera forehand at 3,500, Muster's backhand at like 3,100 or so, and Sampras' second serve, approaching or passing 5,500 RPMs!!!! Doesn't seem possible at all.

I agree with bcaz. I went to the US Open in 98 and saw a doubles match in a side court with Rafter-Philippousis vs. Ivanisevic and some Cratian player. When Mark hit that ball it sounded like the racket was breaking. We were sitting up close because it was a small side court.

Fernando "Gonzo" Gonzalez by far. I've seen so many of his matches, this guy is vicious. He has to be one of the biggist hitters on tour (but its all low % so he gets frustrated all the time, and blows it off like in the Coria Match)

I have to definitely agree with Triplethreat, Gonzalez is the biggest hitter on tour. I cant believe others haven't mentioned him at all. The man is simply crazy. He hits the ball as hard as he can no matter what. Watch the tapes!
