During USTA and High School tennis, is it legal to have a set of headphones playing music on court? I played this guy in a USTA match and on changeovers, he put on his headphones and was listening to music... a bit weird! I was just wondering if this was legal or not. I know, it's a stupid question, but thanks anyways!

I don't know why it wouldn't be legal. I believe the guy who dismissed Sampras in the 2nd round of wimbledon that one year was listening to music during the changeovers.

You're probably thinking of the NBA, they told Vinsanity he couldn't listen to music during pre-game warmups because headphones were "unauthorized jewelry", or something lame like that.

Are you sure he was listening to music? Maybe he was getting advice from his coach.

Lots of players do it. I do not recall anything the rules of college, USTA or ITA that prohibits the use. However, it could be construed as some type of receiver from the coach. Of course, in college, coaching is permitted.

Wow... think of the possibilities... have a radio receiver disguised as an iPod w/ earphones... your coach could tell you everything! Who will be the first to try that bit of shenanigans out?? Totally do-able...

I usually wear headphones. It just gets me pumped up to listen to Godsmack's "I Stand Alone"

Maybe it's just a recording of himself saying motivational phrases..
"I saw that shot you missed, don't worry, you got it next time" "Just watch the ball, shanking it is fine once in a while, but keep your eye on it" "You're a great guy, I love you, you love you, lets win this" "Who's your daddy? that's right, you are. Now show this guy who's the man" yeah... or maybe not... |
