I do not know why Sampras had wrist pain and neither do you.

I still want to know what could have caused elbow, wrist, etc. pain in players in the days prior to poly strings and stiff racquets. Why is it that whatever caused it back then would not still cause it now?

I know what caused my pain back then (1999).

How very adult of you to respond this way (I am assuming you are an adult by age).

I am not saying it is technique or equipment. I am saying I do not know what caused it. You are saying it must be equipment. Nobody can be certain. Pros get injured all the time. Sometimes it is because they tweak something with their movement. Sampras is not perfect.

Those are fair points. Most of the posts I have seen are people who all of a sudden got tennis elbow after switching equipment (such as myself).

John Newcomb had tennis elbow in the 1970's. So did several other pros back then. In my early days players got TE & wasn't a switch to some ultralight super stiff frame or very stiff string, just plain old over use.
I had people get over TE by changing grip size & tension, both up and down, so you never know what will work for a particular player.
To conclude back on the topic, poly feels different, the Williams sisters must feel they don't need it.

If I hit the number of balls they do a week, I'd go full gut, too.

I've always wanted to try an all gut string job, perhaps I'll buy a pack.

As I said, it was because he tried poly string for a few weeks in 1997.

In this interview he mentions that he tried new strings, but had to switch back to his old ones after he got tendonitis: http://www.asapsports.com/show_interview.php?id=12987

No, it's because he had bad technique LOL

Honestly, I think the reason was the fact that Sampras used such a heavy racquet. In combination with dead strings that puts a lot of stress on the wrist.

I think it's just a preference. I use full gut in a dense string pattern like the williamses. I gotta say, most of the pros that use poly (in a hybrid of full stringbed) are using open string patterns. (Federer, nadal, Roddick, Murray) Dense string patterns have less power, so it's better to use soft strings. (This is totally my opinion, don't want to step on anyones toes)

had the same thing happen.

i am former division 1 player, playes satelites, was a teaching pro for 10 years.

cannot use poly strings. I have eastern forehand, backhand grips and continental grip on the serve. it is not technique, I had never had problems before using poly strings.

I have gone back to using tecnifibre or vs gut and no arm problems again. I did switch to the dunlop aerogel 200 as well from the slazenger henman rackets and no problem with the new rackets either
