That posted schedule is pretty typical for FL. full time programs....and the exact reason they are vast overkill. I get that the schedule has to satisfy the parents paying lots of money.
But if you were to interview the top 20 men and women I would guess that the vast majority played other sports like soccer until age 12-14. And I also bet their time spent on tennis and fitness was half or a third of what the academies schedule. Deep and intense practice, right on the edge of ones current abilities, can't be done over 1.5-2 hours a day. Add in 3 strength/flexibility training sessions per week of 45 minutes per session. So 1.5-2 hours of quality practice 5-6 days a week....3 45 minute strength/flexibility sessions is more than enough. I see many kids of equal talent and desire, some academy kids and some who spend 1/3rd the hours on the court....and the academy kids end up no better and sometimes worse. The law of diminished returns applies to tennis practice. Last edited by TennisCoachFLA : 08-29-2009 at 07:15 AM. |

It is an academy near Tampa. I am not going to say the name because it really doesn't matter. If you call around, almost all the academies have the same schedule for full time. IMG & Saddlebrook have very similar schedules.
I agree with TCFLA and Star that it should be more about quality than quantity. |

What you see is the standard academy program. For example, some players at Bolletteiri's go to Manatee HS, others are at the Pendleton High School(which is right there at IMG) and some are home schooled.
I know that both places have a lot different training schedules for their very top players than what is listed on their websites....... You have to remember that many of the very top players have private tutors. |

Not disputing that but your post made it sound as if both Saddlebrook & IMG had standard schedules like the academy mentioned. That's not the case. The "standard" is what's listed. The 'very top' that you mention are the outliers.
