Default Stupid Idea - Tennis All-Star Event

Helfant planning ATP All-Star event in California
Read about it here: http://www.tennis.com/news/news.aspx?id=184712

Isn't the end of the year championship the tennis "all-Star" event?????

Stupid ideas like timed "chase the drop shot" and "Serving speed" challenges just make tennis look silly and sound like a good chance to pick up an injury. It's bad enough that most "all-star" games are jokes, I'm sure this would just be horrible.

Granted, if you want to do some fun PR type tennis event, like they do on Kid's day at the US open, then fine, do some light tennis things in a fun atmosphere where people can get close to they players..... but these sort of silly tennis challenges should be dropped.

If you want a all-star event in the middle of the season, move the end -of-year championships and call it something else. That event is the real "all-star" where the best play the best.

Agreed. Dumb idea. I'm all for new ideas, but this just seems tedious and meaningless.

I dont think its a bad idea... All Star games in American sports seem to generate good attention, and having one in tennis won't be that bad of an idea either. What he suggests is just a 2-day event. It won't do tennis any harm. Definitely no harm trying.

I think shortening the schedule and better TV coverage are more pressing issues to expand tennis' popularity, not putting out some hokey all star event as a band aid to the real problems tennis is facing.

My point is they already have an all-star event ( the year end championships).

Honestly, I think the little skill games they are going to dream up are just silly. I'd also like to see what the players are going to say about this? How much money will they have to shell out to make everyone in the top 10? top 20? Attend this event? Does Rafa really want to run down drop shots in a timed game that doesn't mean anything? Are they going to hand out ranking points or just make it a Master's event so they have to come ......

No one says we will treat it seriously, but its just like another Arthur Ashe Kids Day, but this time its the ATP version and its right before Indian Well Masters. This kind of event will make ATP having more exposure and more fans friendly.. and its not like players would exhaust themselves in this event. It would probably take them like 2 hours (they would be at Indian wells anyway to prepare for the tournament), and the fans would be happy definitely.

Don't think this will work and I agree it is a bit silly, but at least they want to try something to increase the popularity. If it was up to me I would suggest staging some kind of events where amateurs can do these kinds of things. Maybe at some amusement parks. As a reward the winners can get some free US open/masters series tickets or maybe a chance to hit a few games against the US open finalists.

Default Public announcement to Mr Adam Helfant, the CEO of ATP

PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT TO
MR ADAM HELFANT, THE CEO OF ATP,
FROM
THE INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY OWNER OF
THE TENNIS ALL STAR EVENT

This is in response to the announcement made by Mr Adam Helfant, the chief of ATP. Mr Helfant introduced an innovative idea concerning an All Star event for tennis, and he represented as his own idea, to promote the sport.

Besteam8, Inc. is an international sport management team, a duly registered corporation in the State of New York. Besteam8, Inc. is a legal founder, and intellectual property owner of the Tennis All Star event. We found Mr Helfant's idea disturbing, due to the fact, that the All Star event and its logo has already been registered at the US Trademark Office approximately a year ago and publications have been distributed to significant figures in the tennis world. We are confident that Mr Helfant is not trying to take our brainchild away from us, but rather it is an unfortunate co-incident.
