I noticed that players from Spain, Argentina etc. are given a lot by their governments. Is it the same in the US or are they expected to fund their own training?

Not from our government. But we have the USTA - and they take some of the money from the US Open ticket, overpriced food, and t-shirt sales and do give aid to young prospects. But the kid's family will have to do things the way the USTA wants or they won't get anything. So I'm not holding my breath waiting for the next US champion to come from this channel - more likely it will be a kid with a semi-affluent family that does it on their own or one who goes to Bolleteri or one of the other tennis academies...
