...honestly, i'm not trying to be a dyck here...but you don't need other people to tell you when it is too cold to play outside..Listen to your body, a little common sense takes you a long way.

I was thinking about this last night. The temp dropped to around 45 and I was playing for about 3 hours. When it was over, my knees were on fire and my back was stiff. I also got really cold and had the shakes for a bit.

What sucks is that when I started it was 58 or so and was doable. I even sweated a bit. The temp dropped so fast that it just hurt.

Regardless, I did it again today. Just wore more clothes and started at an earlier hour.

You should be in Atlanta. Wind chill in the mid 20's today. I am supposed to have a league match tommorow, but the high is only supposed to be 39.
I want to play, but I don't like it under 45 degrees. At least its doubles.

Yeah it is supposed to drop to around 35-45 all day tomorrow. I think I am going to take the day off.

I will play in 28F tonight....brrr...not my cup of tea, but I can't do much about it, as our indoor court has no heating at all and the temperature is the same (if sometimes not even lower) than outside temps.

Played in the afternoon yesterday. It was 48 degrees. The balls were not bouncing a whole lot. Not great for my heavy topspin game.

Once it goes below 50 degrees I play indoors or switch to paddle.

Why would you prefer doubles when it's cold? I'd prefer singles since there would more moving around and less standing around getting cold.

JackB1,

Where do you live in Atlanta? I live in Marietta. Do you play singles?

40 and up is good for me. Right now it is 20 and I'm antsy as hell. It is always nice to get a bit of a break to heal up and what not, but at this point I'm good. Time to start running.

I've been hitting against the garage the last few days, with highs in the low teens.

I last for about 15 minutes.

But hey, it's still practice.

In the cold pressureless or MicroX tennis balls are a must. The last time I played it did not reach 32 F, and they still had a reasonable bounce.

Below 40 it REALLY affects the ball/bounce.

Default Outdoor Tennis

I built a court in my backyard this summer, so I am trying to prove to my wife I can play (at least hit) every day for a year. (When I won the argument to built my court, it was " honey I can play tennis every day, we can only use a pool for a few months!"). I have had to shovel snow off the court twice, but am managing to keep it going so far. I am finding that my tennis partner on the really cold days is Tennis Tutor. This week here in Kansas it has dipped to single digits, but its the wind that makes the difference. If you are dressed appropriately you can hack it. I keep a tub of balls in the house to keep them warm, then about every 20 to 30 minutes I come in to get warm balls (tennis balls from the tote), and go back at it. I know the neighbors are wondering about me, but it really is refreshing to enjoy our sport in all weather. I used to coach college tennis and we would not even practice if under 40 degrees and more than 10 mph wind. I used to hate winter and stay out of the cold, but this bet with my wife has given me a new appreciation of the different seasons and why I love tennis all year long. Try it, you'll like it!
