"Pancho Segura watches tennis daily from the comfort of his couch on Tennis Channel and remains one of the game's leading analysts. How good is he? In a discussion before the start of the US Open, Segura told Tennis Week "Del Potro will win the US Open. Del Potro's the one." He reiterated that prediction during a book signing he conducted during the first week of the Open at the National Tennis Center."

With all the players, upsets, variables, and accidents or injuries possible, how could Segura know that two weeks before it happened?

Little Pancho is given too little respect here.

Every legend his having his/her say about who's gonna win each major. Someone's gotta get it right. But I agree, the amount of notice Segura gets on this forums doesn't seem enough for someone who has accomplished as much as he has.

And somehow Pancho divined that Federer would only get 40-something % of his first serves into play. If Fed had gotten his usual 60+ % of his first serves in, it would have been a different result and Pancho would not have been right. But I'll give credit to Pancho for recognizing the Del Potro has the potential of getting to the final.

I know it's been written here before but I thought I'd mention again that Ellsworth Vines wrote in his book that Segura was the fifth player player after Budge to around 1978. The four ahead of him were Budge, Kramer, Gonzalez and Laver in that order. The five behind him were Riggs, Rosewall, Hoad, Sedgman and Trabert.

It is pretty cool that he called it but I don't know how much you are going out on a limb when you are picking a guy with his ranking who had the summer that he did. If he had called Gaudio when he won the FO now that would be different, but props to him for calling it nonetheless
