if the ATP is a company, then the journeymen are simply the employees.

They win enough matches to scrape up a decent yearly salary and continue playing tennis. They play challengers, and qualify for a few ATP/Masters/Slams a year.

What I wonder is if you're pulling say $100,000 a year and spending $50,000 of that on travel, lodging and food, and some of that in taxes, etc....

...then when you hit 35 and you can't compete at all anymore, what do you do? You haven't made enough to stash away enough for a retirement certainly. Teach?

Fair question - I think it's when you're always ranked outside ATP100 or get booted off a LI HS team based on a psychiatric report requested by your doubles partner.
