Hey, I'm trying to set up a basic home server, so I installed Windows server 2000 on an old computer and connected it to the internet.
It installed clean, runs well, connects to the internet with no problems, but that's about where my knowledge in this area ends. What I need help with is configuring it so that I can access files via typing in an ip address or if its possible, some sort of url that can get me to my files. I tried to set up a virtual directory but when I type in my IP it says: Directory Listing Denied This Virtual Directory does not allow contents to be listed. If anyone can help me set this up or point me to a good tutorial on it I'd really appreciate it.

^^ good link.
Is there any way to set it up so I can just type in, for example, tennisguyak.com and get to a web site on my server?

Theres a way to do everything.
How many computers do you want to connect this server? Will they be connectging from other locations or all in house?

I would say an FTP server would be the easiest and most efficient. The other PCs wont be able to access the server by a name, but just through Ip address. But with FTP you can also save files to the server instead of just receive.
To be able to type tennisguyak.com and get the server the name has to be resolved to an IP. This can be done with a simple hosts file edit or you can host the webpage and register the domain so its in the root DNS servers. heres a couple more sites to check out. http://lifehacker.com/130806/how-to-...ome-ftp-server http://www.w3schools.com/
