The French should learn and adopt the exact same surface for French open. Vamos!

“You can’t get the support on the footing, and I use strong traction. On clay the one who moves better is the one who wins, but here someone hits hard towards one side and you’ve lost the point. If things go on like this, there will be a tournament less in my calendar (in 2013). I am not going to take risks. I leave with my hip tired from trying to rectify the movements”. “I’ve lost because Fernando has been better than me and has played very well the important points. The surface is the same for everyone”.
“I had told him already not to play this year, and I hope he won’t do it the next one”, said Toni Nadal. (It says then that the court was built by a different company than the one which carried out for years the research into the blue clay, and that there are people working until 4 am trying to fix (asentar) it).
“We respect Rafa’s opinions, and if next year he doesn’t play, it would be a very big loss for the tournament” said Manuel Santana.
“I leave with a lack of confidence that I shouldn’t have after all the work I’ve been doing”, Nadal said.

He should have listened to Toni...

He needs to brush it off.

He should have listened to Toni. I really don't know why he insists on playing this Godforsaken tournament each year anyway. It should be striken from his schedule, never to return again.

This is very unfortunate, and just proves that what I have said many times on here to be true. Nadal is mentally fragile, and one bad loss can destroy a boatload of confidence he may have had at the time. He shouldn't let this piece of sh*t tournament bother him. He should shrug it off, give em' the old one digit salute, and move on. Letting this ruin the confidence and momentum he gained from MC to Barcelona is just a failure on his part to deal with tough losses mentally.

And stop responding to trolololforthewin, folks. If you ignore his kind, hopefully he will soon go way.

Aww, Rafa looks like such a sad puppy. I hope there's lots of sun in Mallorca so he can energize his balls for a couple of days before he heads for Rome. Andy Murray and Pico are already there so they could have a fight to the death PS tourney to get his competitive juices flowing again.

Congratulations to Fernando for his victory. I wish him the best for the tournament. I'm in Mallorca ... Now Rome!

There is a little something in tennis called ranking points. Nadal has points to defend doesn't he? That is why he plays Madrid. With this loss in Madrid now, if Federer wins the tournament, Federer will be number two.

Fed was going to get the ranking eventually anyway. Playing Madrid,a tournament he has never liked and struggles at made no sense. Especially on this clown clay. And as I told you already;Nadal had already become hyper focused on the clown clay, and had zero chance of winning the title because of it. You know as well as I do that he's slightly touched in the head, and had already mentally checked out before Barnum and Bailey even began. It's a 3 ring circus with an egomaniac at the helm. He should have pulled a Muurya and bailed.

If Nadal is a crybaby b*tch, what does that make Rolaids? He also complained about the courts, and has complained just as much as Nadal has.

Djokovic and others have actually complained in harsher terms than Nadal. Of course it's about Rafa that all the criticism goes on this board... (take note you guys who said there's not much Nadal hate here).

Because it's in his country, and Moya is involved in it, I guess he feels somewhat obliged. Plus, it is a masters 1000.

Hope this will convince him to skip it. He had actually hinted at the possibility of skipping it this year a few months back.

BTW, I suspect Rafa has heard an "I told you so" from Toni, who was so fast to tell the press he had told him to skip it...

It's the worst eventual consequence of this (other than a possible injury, which thankfully didn't happen). He needs not to let this ruin his confidence.

Yeah, but if this ruins his confidence (and he must have been aware of that possibility) then he could lose more ranking points (not to mentions titles) than winning them. Even just because it's disruptive for his preparation for RG. Not worth it.

Djokovic has been saying publicly today that all the top players are planning on boycotting the tournament next year unless they get rid of the blue clay. He said "The winner at the end of the week will be the one who doesn't injure himself, and that is true"

Of course it's Rafa that will get all the blame and the hate about the boycott.

(And of course Federer as per usual is not standing up with and for the rest of the players.)

It is not going to ruin his confidence for RG. The guy has a gazillion clay titles. If he lets the loss of this tournament faze him, what kind of champion would he be?

Toni Nadal has made some very strong statements. Don't have time to translate the whole thing word by word. He says it's an outrage that the ATP approved the Madrid tournament in those conditions. Says the tournament is in a bad location and throws the players game off. Says it's amazing they allowed Madrid to go from indoor hard to clay to begin with, and now allowed them to change the clay itself. Says that he would be thankful to Tiriac if he took this tournament "somewhere else" and let Spaniards organize their own tournaments. Says Tiriac must have incredible power to be allowed to change things in such a manner going against the players wishes and habits. Tiriac has apparently apologized to Rafa. Toni says the the organization that really bears responsibility for this is the ATP for allowing it. He hopes they don't allow it next year.

If you seriously believe this than you haven't been paying attention to Nadal over the years. Nadal is mentally fragile, and will lose all of his confidence if he loses a bad match at a lowly 250 event. Just what do you think him losing to Hot Sauce so early in Madrid is going to do to him? He has already said that losing yesterday hurt his confidence so what is there to argue about? You also keep insisting that Nadal is the favorite for RG,but he is clearly not. I think you full well know that, but will keep right on arguing and insisting anyway.

Is your theory going to be OK, if you know, that he tanked the tournament?

I agree with Toni. The ATP has let Tiriac and his henchmen turn this tournament into a circus. It's a blight on the calendar, and should be scrapped or at least put back on hardcourts during the fall season where it belongs.

Tiriac knows he lost his biggest draw in Madrid mainly due to blue clown clay that he insisted on having. I also love the fact that even though Tiriac apologized,Nadal blew him off and did not respond back.
