Default Mild but Noticeable Discomfortable in a Knee

Hi All,

I'm wonder if it's ...natural to get a mild discomfort in a knee (right above the hard bone joint and felt inside) when you play 2-5 hours/day, 3 or 4 days/week. I certainly don't want this to get worse because i can feel the worse form of this is definitely gonna cause me to drop playing.

Now, can you guys tell me if anything I can do to heal and prevent this? I can only think of playing less and maybe more exercise (but what if this is just inevitable wear and tear so exercise will not help)??

I'm taking glucosamine pills daily but who knows what with it.

Thanks.

I used to get this exact pain when I was a runner. Finally figured out that it happened when my shoes got worn down too far. Ever since that time I always have 2 pairs of shoes that I alternate for all the sports I play.

Probably doesn't apply to you, but who knows.

I have been having pain behind my knee. maybe a lower hamstring or something. Hurts when I stretch out when running. As long as I keep an ace bandage on it, somewhat tight, it doesn't hurt at all. I wrap it just below the Knee half way down the calf. Works for me to play. Plus ice after and advil 1 hour before.

Oh my gosh, this is ...freakishly coincidental. Half of yesterday I was walking with a pair of worn out shoes and the right one's heel was completely worn and the pad inside even crumbled. So uncomfortable (but I was mainly worried about uneven stepping) that I had to go and bought a new pair in lunch time. Now the right knee is feeling uncomfortable which I thought was from my excessive playing.

Thanks. I'm gonna be careful with my shoes from now on.

I put some old walking shoes on the other day and was almost shocked by how worn down the heels were on the inside. Really odd to wear, not good and I got a knee problem around the time I used to walk in them a lot. Probably a connected issue as my feet would roll inwards which can't be good for your knees (well it was a lateral hamstring and IT band thing but it the knee where the pain was).

So erm yeah, make sure your shoes are up to snuff.

You are almost surely an over pronator: http://www.runnersworld.com/article/...727-0,00.html#

The knee problem likely is related as overpronators put more stress on the knee as the foot rolls inward.

Overpronation often occurs in those with flat feet, but certainly not always. http://www.runnersworld.co.uk/shoes/...asics/481.html Overpronation usually can be largely corrected with an orthotic and/or "motion control shoes" that resists the the tendency for the feet to roll inward.

^^^Thanks Charlie, hopefully by making sure I don't let the soles wear down on my shoes should be enough.

I was walking a lot around that time, probably 30 miles a week or more on pavement (much cheaper than the bus

The knee is so complex.

I hope all your ills are corrected by better footware. Good shoes and good replacement insoles are great things to help preserve knee health.

In the above post, the issue of a knee strain with over pronation is raised. Could this be happening to you? (Under pronation, or supination, also will cause knee strain, and is largely correctable by orthotics/proper shoes.)

But because the knee is so complex, there could be any number of other issues going on, including stress/damage to cartilage, ligaments and tendons. You really should get this checked out by an orthopod (bone and joint specialist) with an interest in knee injuries in sports medicine. He may be able to offer you very specific recommendations, while those here on TT can never examine you.

Hi Guys,

What is the reason for a knee to make sound when you bend it all the way and then straighten it? The sound is like clothes static noise. Thanks.

Whatever it is, it is not a good sign. Some surface has been roughened up and causing abnormal friction.
