Hi,
I've searched but couldnt find an answer. I am computer generated at 4.0 playing team tennis (never any tourny). But I have stop playing for almost 3 years...the end of next month will be my 3 year exactly based on my last game played. During this time I had major surgery on I'm trying to get back into tennis however I would not be able to compete int eh 4.0 level and would like to drop to 3.5.

Do I have to wait til the end of this year to register for my team because currently when I tried to registered it said I'm above the current level. I already did the online appeal and it was denied immediatly.

So do I have to wait until the end of next month and try the appeal again or do I have to wait until the end of this year in Dec?

You may only appeal 1 time per year (I believe) but if you are a senior you may self rate after 3 years.

On a related note: I have a friend who last played USTA 2 years and 10 months ago because in the interim he has had a heart attack, 2 hips replaced and chronic back pain. Three years ago he was a well esatablished 4.5 doubles player. Two months ago he appealed for medical reasons to compete at 4.0 and was denied twice. The district said his injuries were not catastrophic enough. He was told he needed to wait 3 years since his last match (since he is a senior) before he could sign up and self rate.

To be honest, his strokes are still at 4.5 , he is just not mobile enough to compete at that level.

Really, I didnt know I can only appeal once a year. I would have waited until the end of next month first to see since that would be the 3rd year. Now I feel very bummed still.

You will be able to self-rate again in January. Your year-end computer rating is good for 3 calendar years (2 years for 60+ players). If you have a year-end 2007 rating, it is good for 2008, 2009 and 2010 play. You will be stuck at the 4.0 level, though, as beginning in 2011, self-rates will automatically be entered into the system at their last level. The .5 drop is being deleted. You would be able to file a self-rate appeal.

You could file a medical appeal, but they are extremely difficult to get. You would basically have to lose a limb to get a medical appeal granted, and even that isn't a given.

Why don't you just use the rest of this year to play your way back into shape and back to your level? Then resume your 4.0 career in January. Play as many matches as you can; try to hit with better players. Drill. Get in the best shape possible. Play a few 4.0 singles tournaments.

As raiden031 said so eloquently in another similar thread, players like you appear to want to come back and dictate their winning %.

I don't believe that you are limited to one appeal per year, but as nothing has changed since you last appealed, if you try again it will be denied. The online appeal is an automatic process based on your exact rating. If your rating is outside the appeal range, you are denied, end of story.

There is a separate process for medical appeals, although they are very difficult to get and the USTA has tightened up on them substantially over the last few years.
