Sanctioned mixed tournament: can a 4.5 play with a 3.0?

Hi folks,

Rookie post here, so be gentle.

I did search a bit in the existing threads but wasn't sure of the wording to find the proper hits for this (if they exist).

Anyway, I just signed up for a sanctioned mixed tournament and was surprised to see a 4.5 guy playing with his 3.0 girlfriend (and, for that matter, a 4.0 guy playing with his 2.5 girlfriend). Is this legit? I thought that mixed partners couldn't be more than one full rating point apart - or is that just a popular myth in my neck of the woods?

Rules for USTA leagues don't necessarily apply to tournaments. The tournament director can allow this if he wants to.
