Great instruction from a great coach, and if players at any level can incorporate even some of the recovery and movement techniques demonstrated here, I think they'll find that their success on-court will increase exponentially.

Secondly, I now have a question. Near the beginning, about 8 minutes in when he's talking about "a lot of players that use just their arms put a lot of speed into their shots...while players that use their entire body puts a lot of weight into their shots." What exactly does this mean? How could a ball that's traveling faster be "lighter" than a ball that's traveling slower? Honestly, I have experienced this before on the court. Some people hit pretty "heavy" shots even though their shots seem pretty slow while other people that hits blazingly fast shots seem pretty light and easy to return if you get there in time. What law of physics is at work here? Of course, a lot of spin would also translate into more force which would cause the ball to feel heavier on impact...but the coach in the video didn't mention anything about spin.

Only using your arms only gets you a limited amount of spin. That's why you see rec players trying to smack the ball hard and keep hitting it long. Basically he meant you'll get more spin potential using your body compared to only arm. |
