Default Jerzy Janowicz and Nike

I was surprised to see Janowicz show up at the Paris final and not have had Nike intervene and kit him out in a set of current gear. He was still wearing a mixed set of older styles as in his other matches (it looks like his deal is a local deal from back in Poland given he's also got other sponsors patches on his shirt).

I'd have thought, as has happened in the past, when a player has a random dream run like he did the sponsor would make sure they're kitted out in a current range for a big match, especially given how much attention he received.

For sure... I'm just surprised Nike weren't quicker off the mark in Paris. Although, we have no way of knowing his deal with Nike in Poland. Given his results until now they possibly just game him a box of free clothes and that's about it.

He was wearing a Lotto warmup jacket when he walked on the court for the final too. Nike needs to hook this guy up!

gotta see if this guy can keep this up first. hopefully this isnt one of those major runs then the guy disappears. I like the guy, lots of emotion, good game style, but havta see if he can keep it up and not get ahead of himself

Cool

If Del Potro is really leaving Schnike then Jerzy is an obvious option to go heavy in for. They have gambled very heavily and lost on top juniors in the past with front-loaded deals that blew up when potential wasn't realized. This should be a no-brainer after the Bercy run.

What typically is a "front-loaded" deal in this context? Is it simply lots of cash up front plus additional bonuses for meeting certain performance targets?

Would Monfils count as a recent Nike dud? One would think Tomic is headed down that route.

And is Berdych a Nike junior turned good, and so remains with the Swoosh to this day? Or was he a calculated marketing choice because of his good looks?

Strategically speaking, Nike make take risks like this. What if this kid turns into the next Fed, then what. In order to win, you have to lose.

Donald Young would be a Nike dud.

Let's be real. Nike put their eggs into the Federer/Nadal basket in terms of the men's tour. They account for 98% of their clout. Everyone else is an afterthought. They don't take punts of players by paying them millions of dollars - they offer them deals in the 5 or low 6 figures with performance incentives.

Very true and im sure they are paying Fed/Nadal 98% of what is being spent on tennis. I bet Berdych isnt even getting paid that much being slamless They are not paying up and comers huge money to wear their stuff. Plus Nike has the cash lying around to take chances on a few players. It's not going to break their back if a junior doesn't materialize. Also, who said Del Po in leaving. That seems strange. He is still very young and it's likely that he will be a the top of the game for many years to come.

You forgot about - or more likely didn't hear because you're far away from the US, but Young's Nike deal was over a mil - so they definitely took a bath and probably are a little gun shy. I can hear the Nike internal debate: "big guys serving bombs indoors at the end of the yr when the guys who've been on Tour all year are excited to start their off season. We'll wait and see what he does in January."

Young is a slightly different scenario. He's an African-America and so invokes the Tiger Woods hysteria clause which makes talent spotters overthink the situation and the reality of the level of talent.

Nike desires an American star first and foremost, they're just not finding one in men's tennis.

Maybe it's good time to sign him up BEFORE he will advance?
