Point of discussion: the serve is pretty much irrelevant in women's tennis....

It seems to me that the serve is irrelevant in women's tennis and is just a means of starting the point, rather than a weapon. Currently there are few women on tour who have big serves (obvious exceptions aside) and there are a lot more breaks of serve in the women's game.

Interestingly, that's the route I've gone down with my forehand. I'm trying to standardise the take back by tracking the racquet with my left hand. Thought it was working until yesterday .

As is the use of the backhand slice - all the time we see women stretching and hitting backhands from their shoe laces - my god slice women !!!

I think I'm guilty of this - or put it another way, against better player this fault becomes more obvious, and I end up late on the shot; ie, I can have that milli-second of doubt or thought re "Is this a 2hbh or a 1hbh slice I want to be doing here?" I think because I switched from a 1hbh to 2hbh, it created a bit of confusion in my technique or anticipation or whatever. Anyhow... yes, my slice definitely needs mucho work.

Tennis this morning! ... "Praise be!"... "Praise the lord!"... "haaaaaalleluyah!"

^^^ Goes without saying Jamie!!! Had a great Cheltenham this year but the National is a real lottery. I'm currently like Midnight Club for Willie Mullins and Ballabriggs for Don Mcain Jr.

Anyone else?

Cheers

Ash

Those were two I picked out. My main bet is in The Midnight Club, but instead of Ballabriggs, I went with Oscar Time as a secondary bet.

If the Topham today was anything to go by everything will have fallen over by the second time round in the National!

Cheers

Well chaps I moved outside from the safety of the David Lloyd crappy ice-rinky carpets today onto an acryllic hard court, and the difference was sensational, the sun was shining, the birds were singing and life felt good.

Have you ever had a day where you take the ball early as nature intended, and not because you know you should, but because youre just flowing through it like a river to the sea. Your swings are long and all you want is more.

Today was such a day, imagine the racket head travelling through the ball, yes through the exact core of the ball with a low to high trajectory and the ensueing spin rippage galore of cluster bomb proportions. How nice does it feel when the ball is on the strings for an age and yet its so sweetly out of the centre that it feels as light as a bird in the air. Imagine the rotation and extension, imagine hitting it as hard as you ever have hit a ball with unutterable violence but conversely the absolute unshakable total belief nay certainty that that it will arc and parabola into court within an inch of the line with such speed that velocitous maximum accelerating topspin that will scorch and sear the court with a burning account and record for others to see so the legend can grow.

Imagine the startled and confused look of an opponent who was warm with respect for your skills before but now in entering a state of shock and awe, at the criminally agressive expression of beauty and twisted laws of physics that has just shattered their world view.

..

...

...

Anyway that was the first stroke I played today but I regret not sticking around now and having a second shot or a rally or something, but hey ho!

What beautiful weather we've had this week. Only problem is that having all this good weather now means it's going to **** down with rain for Wimbledon.

Strung up some Prince EXO3 Glory 1.25 for today. Tried the 1.20 in a pre-packaged hybrid early in the year and really liked it, so I have high hopes (which inevitably means it will actually now be disappointing).

I'm also worried that now we have all this nice weather people will be out enjoying it, rather than playing tennis in it.

I did go £5 each way on Oscar Time, so I got a return of £22.50. Though I did also have £10 each way on The Midnight Club, so the net result was a £7.50 loss.

I learned long ago to alway bet each way on the national! My £10 each way on Midnight Club cost me a little too, but luckily Balla and Oscar brought me back back in the game - best NH season ever!

Cheers

Anyone want to bet on Spurs beating Real Madrid by 5 goals or whatever next week?... Nah, didn't think so.

Dave RE Hammers, you must be getting worried, no?...

Rich, "King Kenny' seems to have restored a bot of form and belief for you lot?...

Maybe this should all be in the footy thread, but anyway...

I did consider, but I bet based on form rather than name. Plus I heard it was named after Wales' Rugby Grand Slam in 2005.

Off for some more tennis now. Hopefully I'll get some better quality games today. Barely broke a sweat yesterday, despite the heat.

After ruling the winter league I finally succumbed in the semi final today 7-6 6-1

Who in the hell decided that this Sunday, Saudi Arabia's weather would appear over Liverpool!! Dont know how hot it was at 3pm but it was up there and for a fair haired boy it was just too much. Anyways it had an affect on both of us. One end of the court was impossible, sun in the eyes and when serving it was in that horrible position.
We both struggled this end to hold serve but i was in control of the set serving first and i had a few chances to seal it. At the difficult end a second serve into the corner when someone on the next court decided to kick a stray ball across the court. Play two!!!! I did give it the old MacEnroe hair dryer expletive. Just a bit of luck was needed, another game point that would of effectively sealed the set went amiss as the ball eclipsed the sun on an easy volley.
The tie break started with me at the good end and i raced into a 4-2 lead, changed ends went up 5-2, my serve at the bad end lost both points, lost set.
I think we put so much into that first set with the heat we were both a bit done in, I let the loss of it get to me and he strolled thro the second set after a double bounce he called good in the third game.
Disappointed as it feels like a set back but i know its not and ive played well of late so I should be happy, I just wanted a little cup to show for it all

On another note I strung my TB at 58lbs and although it felt great a lot of balls sailed long on me in the heat. Would deffo go up another couple of pounds in those conditions.

Watching this pristine Monaco clay court on Sky Sports is making me long for Paris. Only 33 days to go until I depart for the French Open.
