Love that lob on the second point. Its tough when you do everything perfectly and get bad news as a result. Both men played very well. |

Great match, like most of Vitas vs Ivan ( which I was fortunate enough to see live).A great rivalry with complementary styles and personalities...

Coming back again at the short but intense Lendl/Gerulaitis rivalry, Vitas had the talent to beat lendl when he seemed coming off nowhere and lendl was having a great playing mod.
in the 81 USO, lendl was coming very strong, but Gerulaitis completely took him out of his game, and Vitas was coming off his worst season in many years. At the CO final next year, lendl was in top form and looking as the favourite to take the oncoming open title at Flushing Meadows.he defeated very handily both Mc enroe and Connors in the hard court summer portion, but Vitas, again, took Ivan out of form and won deservedly after he lost the first set. All their matches, excepting their first one ( Lendl was a rookie on the tour when Vitas beat him at RG in 1979) were extremely close.Great contrast of personalities and styles of play. Some of the exhibition matches they played were even better than their official ones. That speaks out volume about the intensity of their short lived rivalry, which was fueled on personnal disliking, too.
