charizards, aka char, are a random compliment. When someone compliments you, you compliment them "char"s on a scale of 1-10 basically as another "thanks"

actually, it means 10 characters due to the limit

Not sure if you're serious, but when I first got here, I thought it was some English saying. You need 10 characters to make a post.

you can't post anything under 10 characters long, so people add that and variations of it to make their post long enough.

You see this in the results of So Cal Open tournaments all the time, current junior and even college studs getting schooled by guys who are older, who never stopped playing, and are smarter players in their maturity. The juniors are, for their age, WAYYYYY above what the older guys were at that same age, but experience counts for something. Shoot, you see this on the pro tour as well. All the current stars lost to guys in their late 20's and early 30's ranked 150 or something on the way up.

There's a certain type of poster on TTW. Super argumentative, starts fights over everything, in their 40's and 50's, maybe even older, and I just know they're terrible players. They just can't be good AND that clueless at the same time. Like you see posts by young trolls and delusional weirdos on TTW, and hey, unless they wake up one morning and decide they can fly or decide to go on a shooting spree inside a police station, they're going to become old trolls and delusional weirdos. They were never good players, but they want to significant in the world of tennis one way or another, so they've decided to become a self appointed historian of the game. I want to see these dudes play. I'd like to film it, lovingly, slow it down, add a soft filter, and pitch it as a Cialis commercial.

ppl are so nice around here, even on a comparatively malicious thread such as this.

could you imagine asking that same question elsewhere on the internet.

tennis players are generally classy. exception - jester911.

I have always been curious to see if the advice from this board could produce a 5.0 player. The challenge would be take two identical twins and one gets training with a qualified coach that has already produced 5.0 players and the other is trained by this forum via Internet. Now, don't get me wrong, there are some great posters here with really good advice, CharlieFederer comes to mind, and with the help of video cameras and YouTube, I wonder if the Internet could become a good source for coaching. Periodically the twins play each other. Who would win more often?

To really make it interesting, we take another set of twins and one is trained by the posters of this forum, and the other is trained just by Will Hamilton only via Internet and the sole use of FuzzyYellowBalls.com Which site gives better advice? Could a good coach teach via Internet and never actually stay courtside with his student?

That would be interesting to see, although I think both would require a hitting partner that could challenge them accordingly as they progress up to match ready 5.0s. All the knowledge in the world is not going to help if you don't get access to hitting partners that can push you to the next level.

Even if we assume that both twins have access to the same exact hitting partners I would rather be the twin with the coach since I get the advantage of someone pointing out my mistakes at the moment I make it. I don't have to make a video, upload it and wait for an answer and then sift through the garbage to get what I think is the right solution and then go back out to the courts to test the solution.

It would be interesting though because you could save a lot of money if you could become a great player without a coach whatsoever.

I believe a common compromise is a mix of the two for most folks that can't afford a full time coach. Some internet instruction mixed with coaching. Use your coach to bounce ideas off of that you find online.

I think the internet is a great source for coaching but the problem is that sometimes there is too much theory and not enough visual tools. A big one is "pronation". You can find numerous threads about how to "pronate" correctly with a large amount of geometry and physics but some people can't grasp the full details and learn better by just visual examples and feel. Some people learn better when they understand every last detail of how to do something and can make it work on the court by understanding the concepts or at least feel more confident about what they want to do.
