Current match is an extended-format dual match against William and Mary. Coach Brian Boland of Virginia has pioneered these extended format matches so that everyone can play and develop. By agreement between the two coaches, there will be 8 singles matches and 4 doubles matches, for a total of 12 points (each doubles match counts a full point). The ITA and NCAA allow such format changes by mutual consent.
The #7 and #8 matches were played early to ease the court crunch. The doubles matches start at 6 p.m. EST. |

Virginia won all 12 matches in straight sets.
Sanam Singh, the best #3 player in the nation, won 6-0, 6-0. |

Looks like a 5th doubles match was added after singles, and William and Mary won it, so the final dual match score was 12-1, not 12-0.

(let it be known that this guy once throttled drew in a mid-atlantic section championship...it is obviously not worth noting that he was two to three years younger than me, nor that he had not hit his growth spurt and developed that monster serve yet, nor that he got his revenge and beat me even worse the second time we played a couple years later...minor details that detract from the main story) Last edited by mikej : 01-18-2011 at 08:18 PM. |

And yea, Drew at #5 is absurd, especially considering in late November he beat Quigley in Boca Raton at the USTA training camp for college players. |

If they don't win it this year with this lineup, then I don't know...

Illinois, Friday night. I think the Nevolo-Shabaz match should be the main event.

and nice to see jenkins showing some fight / pride, despite the fact that his point isn't of any team importance at this point |

It looks to me like the strength of the Illinois team, when they play top opponents, will be at 3/4 singles and 1/2 doubles. If they can win those positions in a big match against someone like Michigan or Ohio State, then they have 3 of the 4 points they need to win the dual match. But they will not have much margin for error whenever they play a highly ranked opponent.

By all accounts I have read (I was watching the lower 3 courts) Shabaz simply overpowered Nevolo, especially in the first set. |

Anyone know why KU Singh did not play for Illinois. He is probably their best player and they have been waiting a year for his debut. I know he was in India over the winter break playing challengers and the qualifying in Chennai, I just thought he would be in the line-up for this match.

Shabaz is #27 according to the link posted in the 1st post? That's pretty low considering he's playing #1 for UVa. Domijan ranked #3 in the nation and plays #2 for Uva, one would have thought he would play #1 in the line up.
Domijan will certainly be the top player at UVa soon though. What I've seen from him looks very promising. |

Rankings at this point are based on the fall, and Shabaz skipped the indoors in November because he was going deep in the Challenger. He retired with cramps in the ITA All-American (not the first time he has had that problem), so his overall fall record was not as good as it could have been. It will take a while to rise to a more reasonable place in the rankings. Right now, he is ranked below 4 (!) other Virginia Cavaliers. But I don't think that anyone would claim he should be playing #5.

Late notice: Virginia and Notre Dame are in the late stages of an extended format match. Notre Dame seems like a stiffer test than Illinois at the moment.
