A few years ago, I saw Sam in a televised match, maybe against one of the Williams sisters, and was sure that she'd be knocking heads with the top ten in no time. To my surprise, it took her a little longer to really believe in herself and emerge as one of the top talents in the women's game, but she's certainly proving it now. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if she settled in at the top of the heap for at least a few months.
Along comes Jarmila Groth. She made a little bit of a dent last year and I even got to see her right up close in a match at the US Open. Is it just me? All I can see is another young slugger with as much talent, ability, etc. as anyone out there. She's ready to beat everyone... but she just needs to believe it. Similar observations here or elsewhere? Not interested in another "No Sanity in Women's Tennis" thread, just want some other perspectives. |

Watched her some in WTT this last fall and I sort of thought the same thing but she wasn't playing quite the caliber players that are in the top 10-20 women players so it wasn't a very good gauge.

She has a good backhand hit a couple of sweet winners against Wicky

I liked her serve too. Good racquet acceleration for a woman.

I think Groth is following the young slugger BBB curve. Don't see any extra or any deeper texture in her game or strategic mind. Will enter a short 1 or 2 year career peak and then fall into a spiral of injuries, loss of confidence and bad form. We've seen far too many of these. Look at poor Ana. Stosur I see as being a much better player all round.
Groth is a looker though. |
