Prof. Martin Pall - How WiFi & other EMFs Cause Biological Harm
A brief summary for normal people to understand:
There is one known and accepted effect, that of the EMF energy is heating the biological tissues, depending on the energy, frequency etc. This is called THERMAL EFFECT (because gets tissue to get heated)
This THERMAL EFFECT is the only one that the governments bodies are covering and accepting to take measures against.
But, there is another, more insidious effect, NON-THERMAL EFFECT, that is affecting the biology of the people and animals (probable also plants).
This is the most dangerous because is avoided, occulted, not officially accepted and it has to do with the fact that the EMF fields as a whole, produce an effect of attraction or repulsion on the charged ionic groups in the cellular membrane.
As the cells and cell membranes are containing ions which are positive and negative and the external electromagnetic fields, even weak, make those ionic groups to attract each other or to repulse. By this effect alone, some holes are opening in the cell membrane, with some effects on the chemistry inside of those cells.
The holes opened, are scientifically called VGCC (Voltage Gated Calcium Channels) and the disturbing effect is that permits the Ca2+ calcium ions to get inside the cells, and by doing so, it will force non wanted chemical reactions in the cell that will release NO molecules (nitrogen monoxide).
So this intracellular calcium is increased by EMF and is not good.
It has been measured by Professor Arthur A. Pilla, that in a Petri dish where it were mammals biological cell tissue, when exposed to Pulsed Microwave radiation, in cca 5 seconds, the NO electrodes atop of the Petri Dish with the tissue, in the gas phase, started to measure increase in NO gas, gas which has been diffused out of the cells.
So this Nitric Oxide molecules combine with another compound called super oxide and produce something called Peroxy-Nitrite ONOO, which is powerful oxidative, it is not a free radical but it can break down to form free radicals, that will affecting the cell functioning and its health. The cumulated effect over many cells in a tissue, could lead to disease, tumors, etc.
The simplification of the phenomenon is given bellow:
MW or low FQ's EMF's -> VGCC's activation -> (Ca2+ gets int cell) -> NO produced in cell -> ONOO (Peroxy-Nitrite) extremely reactive -> combined with CO2 -> free radicals are produced in the cells -> Oxidative/Nitrosative stress for the cells -> Depletion of antioxidants in the body -> It produce single and double strands breaks in DNA -> Pathological effect -> Tumors disease will start
Even from energetic transport, these EMF are totally much reduced than the Ionized radiation, produced by high energized particles (X-ray, gamma ray, etc), high energetic particles that bombard the tissue molecules and produced free radicals by Compton effect, the EMF fields are producing as well Free radicals through othe r mechanism (been mentioned above)
Medical effects on our body observed:
Melatonin (sleep hormone) is reduced (even drops to 0) by EMF because of calcium signaling.
Have been observed that if you have inflammation in tissues for long time (produced by Peroxy-Nitrite) it can develop to cancers.
Ischemic heart disease
Special kind of heart cells in the sino-atrial node, are the impulse-generating (pacemaker) tissue, called the pacemaker cells, have very high density of these VGCC so are very susceptible to be affected by EMF that produce intracellular calcium.
Pulsed EMF could produce instant tahycardia in the heart.
As well EMF also is affecting the Nervous systems which afterwards affects the heart.
EHS - Electromagnetic Hyper Sensitivity
Some people can somewhat "feel" the EMF radiation. But everybody is not the same.
This effect is also combined with MCS - Multiple Chemical Sensitivity.
The VGCSS will affect in the end, at cell level increase the NMDA receptor activity, through indirect means (for glutamate)
The NMDA receptors mechanisms are similar with VGCC's, meaning the results are the same.
This will increase the sensitivity of the synapses in the brain, by long term potentiation.
Practical speaking, the VGCSS producing intracellular calcium increase, similar like the NMDA receptor mechanism, this will make the brain more sensitive to these effects caused by this exposure to EMF and make those people to feel those increased nervous sensation as if they "feel" the EMF fields.

The symptoms described by "electromagnetic hypersensitivity" sufferers can be severe and are sometimes disabling. However, it has proved difficult to show under blind conditions that exposure to EMF can trigger these symptoms. This suggests that "electromagnetic hypersensitivity" is unrelated to the presence of EMF, although more research into this phenomenon is required.
From the World Health Organization:
EHS is characterized by a variety of non-specific symptoms that differ from individual to individual. The symptoms are certainly real and can vary widely in their severity. Whatever its cause, EHS can be a disabling problem for the affected individual. EHS has no clear diagnostic criteria and there is no scientific basis to link EHS symptoms to EMF exposure. Further, EHS is not a medical diagnosis, nor is it clear that it represents a single medical problem.
