Illinois incoming freshmen Alexander Jesse and Julian Childers won the doubles title at the ITA Summer Circuit event at Purdue. Jesse was also the singles runner up. Great showing for our recruits!

I really don't want to get into the whole thing. The Illini no longer have a chief as their symbol. Time to move on. If you want to read about it here's a good start. Article

thanx

what i meant was that last i heard (like, a lot of yrs ago) the ncaa was tryin to get u guys to drop the 'fightin illini' name altogether, sayin that was racist. i remember readin an article with a few comments from the illini nation wanting u to ditch it.

article doesnt really explain what happened to that bit. but i take it everything is good now?

The name Fighting Illini does not specifically mean the Indians. The soldiers who fought in the World War were called that and some say that is where it actually came from. For that reason, the ncaa and their merciful leaders decided that we didn't need to change that.

Does anyone know what is happening wrt female tennis recruits for Illinois? The last that I heard, only Audrey O'Connor has committed for 2012. Are there other prospects? With three seniors graduating, O'Connor would be only the seventh player for next year's roster.

Great to see. I don't expect these two to break into the doubles lineup next year, but it has to help us out for them to be playing together at this point in their careers. Is Dancer able to suggest which events these guys attend in the summer and pair them together for doubles?

Ram loses to Leyton Hewitt in three sets in the Newport semifinals. Still, a great week for him, upsetting the No. 2 seed in the quarters.

I watched a good bit of that match - Ram was up 4-1 in the 1st set and Hewitt won 5 straight to take the set 6-4. You don't see too many players serve and volley on the tour like Ram does.

Yeah, he had his chances. He did good to regroup and take the second set after letting Hewitt back in.

I emailed Coach Dancer about it. He said it is a collaborative effort. They meet with each team member to discuss a schedule and make adjustments based on match counts, winning percentage and experiences.

Kevin Anderson and Rajeev Ram are playing in the Atlanta Open this week. Anderson is seeded No. 5 and Ram got an SE into the main draw on account of his semifinal appearance at Newport. The doubles should be interesting too.

USTA Boys' Clay Court Championships
Hiltzik won again and is into the quarterfinals. If seeds go according to plan, he'll meet his rival Schneider, Tarheel recruit, in the finals.
