Hey
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KAzL7COzifA Ok so this is my tennis video that I am gonna send to all the US colleges that I have applied to. I am not applying as a tennis recruit but more like a future recruit or something.. I am basically hoping to get in based on my academics but I thought sending this video might help... so the video is hitting till the 7th minute then a few volleys, overheads and then a few serves... My volley sucked in this video but I have improved on the technique a lot since then and now its a LOT better... other than that please rate my game I have been playing for around 3 years Also my serve seems so weird (that left leg) so any tips on that? Or is it fine? Thanks!

Honestly, that's not a very good video (not speaking of the tennis itself) nor is it really relevant to admissions in colleges. Most admission reps have tons of applications to sort through, and won't have time to check out a random 10 plus minute tennis video of a 4.0 player, nor will it matter to them. And with the shaky camera work ongoing repetition it doesn't really represent you that well. If you're interested in playing tennis at the schools, it would probably be better to contact the coaches and see if they're interested in seeing your video. If they are impressed, then they'll pull for you with admissions.

Dude...have you not learned from other threads like this - you're gonna get rated from 2.0 to 5.0 and everything in between!!! Getting any kind of meaningful rating on here is near impossible - it's been known for a certain poster to rate two guys playing Futures as 3.5's at best!!!
If you've ony been playing 3 years then you're doing fine! Good Luck with college apps. Cheers Ash

AND BTW, good luck with everything. With your strong academics you'll definitely have plenty of choices available to you. I wish I hadn't been such a slacker in high school.

1) You twirl your racquet way too much, even for a rallying session. But hey if you're comfortable with that, go for it. In a faster rally/match, the ball may come back before you're done twirling.
2) Your forehand uses a lot of arm. Again if you're comfortable with that, keep at it. But if you can use more body, it'll be better. 3) Racquet-back on the backhand happens sort of late. And again, not enough body, a lot of arm. You also finish your backhand with the weight behind you, it should be in front of you. |

When you volley, think about volleying more with your feet than with your racquet. It looked to me like you were focusing on the short swing and not getting any body weight behind the ball. Footwork doesn't end at the baseline--- you need to be more active with your feet at net.

Your strokes are pretty good. If you go to a D3 school, you should be able to play on their team, especially if you keep improving. D1 is probably unrealistic.
Also, you need to invest in a tripod. The first 5 minutes of that video is like the Blair Witch Plays Tennis. |

alright thank you both for your comments and J R B well since I am not exactly applying as a tennis recruit if I get in a Div 1 college based on my academics do you think I'll be able to play on their team. I mean not as a freshman but maybe some time later. And how does this work like do they allow students to become a part of their team as in train with them but only let them play until they are good enough? or do you have to train by yourself and try out for the team when you become good enough ?
also with my academics and this level of tennis do you think I am strong candidate for admission in the top US colleges.. for engineering ? Thanks! 'The first 5 minutes of that video is like the Blair Witch Plays Tennis.' Haha will do

^^ what JRB said.
should be good for D3, maybe even D2, just on strokes.... but if you have only played 3 years, there is good news and bad news. good news is you have some tennis talent, to get to this shape after 3. bad news you are lacking in the experience department.. coaches will want to know how your game holds up in tournaments. |

well yes I think I am gonna agree with you on that I do have a tough time playing my natural game on major tournaments but I think if I keep playing and If I start to play at college level that will hopefully go away...
so good/mediocre academics + this level of tennis = a strong candidate for top US colleges ?

film from behind. so we can see not only your swing but also the flight/placement of the ball.
your swings look not bad but we can't say anthing about your depth, consistency and spin. |

teams usually have walk-on try outs even if you are not admitted for tennis as a freshman.
have you talked to any coaches? better go straight to the source |

well I have emailed all the coaches (this video) waiting for their reply and I was asking like if they consider me not good enough to play on their team for example if I am willing will I still be allowed to train with them and when they think I become good enough eventually get to play with the team ?
or if I am not good enough now.. I have to train on my own get better and then try out for the team ?

And yes u will have to train by yourself not with the team. They will not let u practice with them if not on the team. Most teams at that level have players coming in to fill the spots. There r walk ons and some r good enough to make the team. Never give up and have fun trying. Last edited by 10ACE : 02-20-2011 at 06:53 AM. |

True MIT is DIV 3 and also the # 1 engineering college. Either way it's a win win.

You're ball hitting techniques look pretty good. Keep up the good grades. As for the rating, you have to play tournaments to have any kind of legit rating. It's all about who you can beat, not how pretty your strokes look. Good luck.

^^Ahan alright thanks!
and by rating I meant like how would you rate me if I wanted to eventually play college tennis? in that sense.... and I am international also so US ratings would perhaps be different from how my country rates players and stuff.. so anyways..
