The little kid is a junior from Japan that turned some heads at the Orange Bowl last year; the awkward looking adult is most likely that club's coach. Juniors at this level will typically give 5.0s a run for their money, and the only thing they're missing is size.
Edit: I'm looking at W.D's second video posted, with Ken Onishi, of course. The first video was almost comedic

So basically, you say they are exactly what I say.
Juniors typically hit much better than their strategic skills, or their variety, can allow, so pure hitting does'nt mean as much. Old farts employ more strategy and variety, so their pure hitting doesn't matter as much. Either way, they can play in 4.5 -5.0 tourneys here, early round exits mostly. They are good players, and except for a handful here, can beat us all. A "handful" is 10. |

Yeah, the first shot looks like a mishit. It kinda looks like he got too excited and tried to put too much on the ball. Nothing wrong with hitting reverse forehand...
The second shot was more of shot selection problem. He was getting pushed behind and went down the line. The shot will probably have gone in crosscourt with a little more spin. |

First vid shot: pulled out of the FH causing a mishit. opened up left shoulder too early.
Second vid shot: not enough topspin and too much drive. probably also caused by opening up left shoulder too soon. Both could probably be solved by coiling a little more in the prep. Extend the off hand a little straighter to close the shoulders at the beginning allowing a better turn into the shot. |

This board needs to think beyond shoulder turns, unit turns. coiling and uncoiling, racket prep and non-dominant hand use. Thats only 1/4 of your tennis game.

No matter what we know, what we learn, what we practice, and what we do, we are doomed to be recreational players who miss all the time and struggle for any kind of consistency while trying to hit with somewhat decent pace.
And it's not all about US, or ME, or YOU. That opponent facing you has an almost equal say in your results. |

I'd have them a little higher than 4.5 - maybe 5.0 to 5.5 but its hard to tell in such a short clip.

Papa, I like your rating system. Makes me better than what I know I am.

As you know rating players without seeing much is difficult/almost impossible/generally inaccurate. To me they looked like pretty good players like you would see in Div I - certainly looked better to me than 4.5. I'm generally fairly good at this but I'd like to see more to see if I'm accurate. |

I don't think you can rate the 14 year old, as NTRP ratings aren't geared and shouldn't be used towards juniors in my opinion. Someone mentioned he played the Orange Bowl so then that to me is easy, he's a nationally high ranked Japanese junior with international ITF jr. experience. Pretty straight forward. The other guy is a coach who's obviously played in the past and he's no 4.5 so like papa said, a 5.0 is appropriate there.
