College Tennis Online posted a preview of the ACC men's tennis season. Looks like a battle between Virginia and Duke. Hurricanes need to bounce back this season but I'm hot holding my breath.

Pretty good preview. They are overrating UNC though. Losing Hernandez and Boyajian will be a bigger deal than they realize. I don't believe in Vick as a consistent winner at the top of the line-up and Clark and DePaolo aren't ready for massive contributions.

I was surprised to see Saba up at #2 and Mengel at #4. I always thought Saba had more potential than Mengel but until this point Mengel has been the better college player. Redlicki at 3 is about what I expected. Tahir at 6 will be a strong #6 player. I wonder if Semenzato will get into the line-up at some point.
FSU beat Furman and UCF 7-0. The surprise is that Cotrone was playing #1 vs Furman. He has really improved. From a sometimes #6 player to a top 3 at the least, impressive. I saw him play last year. He did seem to have a large arsenal of shots. He wasn't just a stock player. His speed was lacking though, that likely holds him back. #4 is too high for Reed. That will be a weakness for FSU. Bucaro had a breakthrough year last year so it is surprising to see him actually take a step back this year and move down to #5. Last edited by Clemson_tennis : 01-12-2013 at 06:50 PM. |

Semenzato is not eligible until the spring semester, and that means that classes have to have started at Duke before he would be allowed to play. Not sure when their classes started.

FSU is doing something interesting with their top 3. They are rotating the 3 from positions 1-3. Cotrone, Kelly-Houston and Lock. At the moment it looks like Cotrone is playing the best tennis. Kelly-Houston was in over his head at 1 last season so a move to 2 or 3 will help him immensely. Lock plays a big game that can trouble top players so he could be playing #2 this year. If I were FSU I would just continue the rotation all year and never really set it, in order to throw other teams off.

Hoosiers should roll. NC State looks weak this year. Powell was a mediocre 4 last year and is now playing #1. Unless he has a Kevin King style improvement it won't be good for NC State.

what's the deal with Blake Davis? Why is he now #8 for FSU after being #2 last season?

It looks like the ACC has 3 poor teams this year. Miami, BC and GT.
Two great teams. Duke and Virginia. then 3-8 are basically at the same level. Nobody of the middle pack stands out as the worst or the best. |

Big loss for the Duke women.
Meanwhile Juan Spir's free-fall continues. Loses another match in straight sets to an unranked opponent. 6-4 6-1 to SDSU's #1 player. |

Kahan has been out too - hopefully she gets back soon so this team can at least try to be top 5 or so. And hopefully Capra comes back next year ready to make better decisions. |
