One thing is for sure, you'll never be mainstream with a Patek Philippe.

But its true watches are a fashion statement. No one cares about the mechanics these days.
Statistically you are correct. For every person who truly cares about watchmaking mechanics there are 20 who own a luxury watch but want it for the status and 100,000 average Joes who don't care.

totally true. one important point, though, if you're shopping for a 'luxury watch,' is that mechanics have a tremendous impact on value in the secondary market. there are plenty of jewelry brands that turn out expensive watches with mediocre movements, whose value plummets at resale. all the great historic brands (patek, vacheron, breguet, audemars, some cartier models) as well as a few 'revitalized' brands (lange etc.) hold up much, much better in the secondary market, and a few (patek and lange in particular) may see appreciation. cartier is a bit of an exception to the 'jewelry brand' thing, they have a very long watchmaking tradition, and their collection privee has some really nice pieces.

moral of the story being, sometimes, the more you pay, the more you'll keep in the long run, if you're looking to swap out every so often.

Depends on various things. I've never seen a watch I like that costs more than 30,000 CHF. I'm always open to suggestions, but I've seen a lot already.

So, as I understand, these are (some of) the criteria:

-manual wind
-case not too small
-white metal
-simple,clean dial

This is the first that comes to mind:

I've currently got a Debaufre Csar on right now, not really a luxury (cheap!) but I just loved the big chunkiness of it and the orange on the PVD. That and practically zero people have one.

I wear on and off:
- Tag Aquaracer (mostly day to day)
- Rolex GMTII (with a suit)
- Bell and Ross BR03

I've also got a "Muff Diver" for wearing with jeans for a laugh as the name was genius. I have the "Red Muff":

I have my eye on a Piguet Royal Oak Offshore at the moment but I just can't justify it as I'm looking to move house shortly and money is tight

Apparently it is resistant to 100 metres. You must be diving into some serious muffs

What is a luxury watch? What does is do for you that's so luxurious? It's a small machine that measures time. ALL working watches do that. I don't get the "luxury" part. I guess it could be argued that any watch is a luxury. A paper cup half full of water is a luxury. Toilet paper is a luxury. But seriously, what are you talking about?
I don't see anything luxurious about any of the watches pictured here. Also, judging from TV ads, a watch isn't very good unless you call it a "time piece". Anyone that buys a time piece or luxury watch instead of a regular f'ing watch is a fool.

Simpletons like you would never get it.
Never have. Never will.

Now, go watch some dogfights and leave the refined things in life to others.

I don't have a luxury watch, or a time piece, but I'm never late for anything. I bet half of you with your special special watches can't say that.

It's not about that, you simpleton.

I'm not gonna sit here and explain the art of watchmaking to you. I have neither the qualification nor the inclination.

Move along please.

If you don't appreciate watches then don't need to enter into the discussion. Go to something you do care about on the forum.

To be charitable: everyone has something that they are willing to pay extra for to fulfill something that others are unwilling to spend extra for. Of course those who have a bit of life experience already know that. Perhaps you know that already too... but if so why did you make your overly simplistic post?

Not quite luxury. Tag Heuer Kimi Raikkonen F1, Doxa Aquaman with Black PVD, Ritmo Mundo Indy Car carbon fiber face and a 30+ year old Seiko "Pepsi" divers watch.

On my wish list: B.R.M., Anonimo/Dino Zei, Chopard, Graham, Panerai, Hanhart, Alpina and Zenith. If money was no object, Urwerk or Richard Mille.

One can dream, right?

No sure how Italo Fontana is rated by watch experts/philes but as far as I'm concerned it's GOAT. I totally dig the exaggerated "big knob" style of theirs. If you decide to put on a manual/mechanical watch, then you might as well have a big knob since you're bound to be doing lots of rewinding and adjusting.
