I think its all about the timing.... You have to let the ball drop low enough and hit it a lil bit behind you. I've done it a couple times, but not in a match situation though. My friend has actually done it during a game once, but he got a drop volley smacked on him. haha

You have to get so close to it as it comes down that by time you hit the ball it is actually behind you, so it has to be virtually rolling down your chest, and then just give it an almighty wrist snap!

Throw the ball directly into the air and let it come down right past ur nose. Practice hitting it through your legs that way. The other way is to take balls that come to your side and instead of dodging the ball and hitting, let it get behind you and hit it thru.

I working on it! I won't say I can do it until it wins me a point in a match. The last time I was so close!!! I haven't had a shot that I could try to hit it off of for the last three weeks or so...

The evolution of the shot...

I began my training by hitting the balls into the net (after serving a basket or whatever so it's easier to pick them up later...).

Next I started to toss the ball over my head and run back and try and hit it...

Then I started just "feed" the ball (I guess you could say) with my back towards the net and dropping the ball between my legs and hitting the shot.

Now, I do all of that and try to hit the shot whenever I can as long as the situation isn't really serious.

It takes alot of practicing that shot to be able to do it in a match. Also, you can't do it on just any old shot, because you have to be able to actually outrun the ball and hit it as it is falling. When I was playing college tennis and practicing 3 hours 5 days a week I could do the shot any time, now that I'm playing 2 or 3 days, I botch it some, but I always get a few grins when I get it in. One of the best ones I've done was about a week ago from 10 feet behind the baseline.

@wright,

10 feet behind the baseline, that sounds amazing!

I suppose that it doesn't help that I am only 3 foot tall

Here is how to do it, it is flashy but a low percentage shot. It is much better to work on things that allow you to get to the ball quicker then relying on this shot to help you.
