I have started taking chia in plain water or OJ. Is it possible to take too much of this stuff?

_-_-_-_ I'm now making the gel by the gallon. I guess letting the chia seeds hydrate at room temperature for 12-24 hours increases their nutrient availability (thanks SA!) Place in the fridge after 24 hours. I add 13-15 tablespoons of chia seeds to a gallon of purified water. 15T makes a nice thick homogenous gel... while 13T makes it a bit more watery (it will separate slightly when left alone). I drink about 16 oz. to 20 oz. per day Last edited by Bud : 08-25-2011 at 10:27 PM. |

I put chia seeds in my morning and recovery smoothies, and I also put a tablespoon in my 'on the court' liquid container when I'm playing. It holds maybe half a gallon of water and I put in a tablespoon of chia and 1-2 scoops of Cytomax (depending on the heat), and then ice. Works great.

I put 1 TBSP of chia seeds to my drinking water. 48 oz bottle when I go to the tennis courts, 32 oz bottle otherwise. So I maybe get 3-4 TBSP per day. They soak in the water nicely and they are fun to suck on when having a water break on the court
I get my organic chia seeds at Amazon (Nutiva's brand), I found them best price, not tax, free shipping. They ran out of the black ones recently, so I've been reading on, and it seems like there is absolutely no nutritional difference between the black and white chias.

Two chia and oatmeal recipes to try
http://amy-newnostalgia.blogspot.com...meal-chia.html and http://amy-newnostalgia.blogspot.com...chia-oats.html I am currently eating the first one, without any nut butter. I added a half teaspoon of ground chocolate and a good sprinkle of cinnamon sugar instead of the nut butter and honey. I used Coach's Oatmeal from Costco. It's not bad. It's a thicker density than I'm used to eating and its taking me a while to get it down, but its very filling. I got a quarter pound of chia seeds from the bulk bin at Sprouts Market nearby. Didn't want to get a whole pound until I tried them. I'll figure out a way to add them to a smoothie or green tea or juice later on this week.

The best way to eat chia seeds?
Buy G.T. Dave's Synergy Kombucha with green chia. The entire bottle is filled with chia seeds, and Kombucha "Wonder Drink" tastes really good and was even featured in Dr Oz show. |

I use them a couple ways. I turn them into a gel and will eat a couple spoonfuls before a run or tennis match. Good variation is to use lemonade or grape juice instead of water, makes the gel taste a bit better.
I also spread the gel in between PB&J sandwiches - awesome source of energy. To make the seeds easily accessible, use an old spice jar with the holes on top...sprinkle them in smoothies, on oatmeal, or anything where the seeds can actually adhere to something. Putting on salads and cereal is a waste since they just trickle to the bottom of the bowl. I've also gone Tarahumara style and cooked up some Masa Harina and Chia into some patty cakes. Not the best tasting but still tweaking the recipe. |
