Default Early Season Rating Question

I haven't been able to find much information on USTA early season ratings and I'm hoping someone can shed some light.

Last month I received my early season rating and I was bumped up. It was listed on the local USTA section site, but tennis link still shows me at my old level. I also tried to register for the fall season on the same team I played for this spring but was given an error message that my level exceeds that team.

Is tennis link incorrect/inconsistent with publishing my level, or is an early season rating not a "real" rating? For example, any only temporarily at this level pending my play for the rest of the year? I'm just not sure what my true NTRP level is (old rating vs. new rating).

Your ESR rating applies for fall early start leagues only. It is a real rating for that purpose only. You can still play in tournaments with your old rating for example.

The tennislink level will not get changed till the end of the year.

Yearly ratings usually come out the very end of November to the 1st of December.

Your early start rating could go back to your original rating at that time. So, although you will most likely keep the early start rating, I wouldn't start making plans around it just yet.

Spring was my first time to play USTA tennis so I had to self rate. When the year end ratings come out will that be when my rating changes from "S" to "C"?

Any idea on how easy/difficult it is to keep an early season rating? I attempted to appeal it but was denied and I'm curious what it would take to get to bumped back down at the end of the year.

You will change from an S "self-rated" to a "C" computer rated at the end of the year.

The right thing to do is to play your best in the upcoming season. If you stay bumped up then that is where you belong. If you get bumped back down then at least you aren't gaming the system. Don't play the upcoming season trying to massage your rating to where you want it.

There generally is not to much difference between ESR and end of year ratings. However, I had two teams mates that went oppositie directions last year ... one was rated up on ESR and then moved back down the other was moved up at end of year but not for ESR.

The ES ratings are basically a snapshot of what band your dynamic rating puts you at the time they run the report ... In the past they generally would grant an appeal of ES ratings if the section folks think there is a good chance your year end will drop. Now I think it is much more automated and less room for their discrection.

Finally, assuming your 2011 adult season is over there is not much you can do about your rating. Any changes will be reflective of how the people you played and their opponents have done at the district, sectional and national level. If the opponents you played get crushed in the playoffs and the people that crushed them get crushed at the next level your rating will drop ... they do well and your rating goes up.

If you are still playing then your results will still affect your rating and it could continue to rise or drop ....
