Default 2011 US Open

I will be traveling to New York City for the first two days of the US Open. I am wondering if there are any safe, convenient places to stay near the US Tennis Center in Flushing / Corona Park. Ideally, within walking distance. Otherwise, i would be commuting from Manhattan.

Thanks for any help.

Nothing in short walking distance. Laguardia Airport not too far, a doable walk, some hotel/motel places near there that would be adequate but not all that pleasant, pretty much on the highway or in some marginal neighborhoods. Look for Laguardia Airport area hotels. Personally I'd stay in Manhattan and just take the #7 subway.

Another option is to stay in Flushing Queens. You will be one stop away from the Open. You won't need a car, you won't want a car, if you stay in Flushing.

Things may be better for the 2014 Open. I heard on radio this morning that NYC is in the process of condemning land for a retail and hotel complex close to Citi Field, just across the tracks from the tennis center.

You do realize that the hotels near LaGuardia are 2 miles in each direction from the NTC, right?

Check out this Holiday Inn on 114th St- 2 blocks from the NTC.

Marginal neighborhoods huh?

Don't you know that anywhere other than NYC is dubious quality?

EAch day after attending the Open, I go back to Long Island and have myself completely detoxed by professional and sent everything I carried to the incinerator. Quite a pain to burn my Driver license, credit cards, and melting my keys but can't risk bringing dirt from Queens back to the island.

The commute isn't bad. I did it last year (my first time in Manhattan). Very easy travel on the subway. I felt safe the whole time. I'm looking to return again - lots of fun at the Arthur Ashe stadium.

I don't remember a lot from trip to the USO in 2005, but I do remember that taking the subway was very easy, it seems like most of the people on it were going to/coming from the Open just like me, and NYC is effing expensive. Perhaps you can stay anywhere along the #7, especially somewhere with more reasonable food choices.

That was funny.

To the OP, take the #7. You ain't staying in a place next to the stadium (US Open ain't Indian Wells).

I have a small villa on the shores of Lake Corona. You're all welcome to join us for pre-match orgies of booze, 9 ball pool and DVDs of old French Open matches. Specifically, the Borg Lendl final.

Are you gonna be able to make it out to the island this outdoor season?

Don't do flushing. I just don't trust it because anything out in far queens and brooklyn is just not regulated as much as it is when you get closer to the city. People can scam and screw you over and it might fly under the radar. Anyways, there's nothing to do around flushing and the commute is a bi tch. Manhattan is pricey. Also, watch out for bedbugs. You can not get rid of them once they're in your belongings, they don't die and they will feast on. There's places that offer deals for travelers. Go on craigslist, they're good deals and none too expensive.

New York City is very safe all year unless you carry a weapon. Crocodile Dundee time is long gone.
