The lower the tension, the more power AND more spin you get.

About the durability, unless it's coming into contact with water, don't worry about it. And if you don't prestretch it, it'll really last a long time.

I'm NTRP 5.0 and I get around 70 hrs from each stringjob.

70 HOURS?!?!!?!! Good lawd, that's a lot of hours. Do you switch out the original poly cross at all or do you use it til gut breaks?

I've never restrung my crosses. In fact, now that I string myself and don't prestretch, I find I don't at all notice the poly crosses dying. Before I used to notice it from around hours 20-26.

The other things I should probably reiterate is that I hit with an 89 sq" 18x20 string pattern racket. So going to a larger headed open pattern stick might yield different results for players at the same NTRP level. If so, just go up to 16L gauge and I'm pretty sure you'll see the same results.

And for players at lower NTRP levels, you should probably see significantly longer durability.

If mine lasted 70 hours it would be my setup. Unfortunately I only get 8 now, so it just won't work. I will revisit since I have a set of gut left, but for now I have had to revert back to poly mains.

Getting rid of the extra 89 tour because I can't play as much as I would like to. So now I only have the single 89 tour to hit with.

If I can get over 20 hours from a gut/poly set up that would last me about 3 weeks. I'd be ecstatic if that could work out.

Hopefully the small head size and 16x20 string pattern contributes to great durability.

If you're going to go gut-poly, I'd strongly suggest keeping a backup racket strung with a multi or syngut for those occasions where there's a little drizzle or puddles: I learned the hard way last year that gut strings can only handle moisture when they're new. Once they get a little worn, water will kill them fast.

Re your head size and string pattern, the other variable that will increase longevity is the tension: the looser you go, the longer they'll last. Just like the looser you go, the more power AND more spin it'll have.

I'll have a spare racket, but not another spare 89t. I do not play competitively and am okay with packing up and heading out to eat after a string break.

My tension will be on the lower end of the spec range at 53/45 so that'll hopefully contribute to longer life.

This is why I love my classic 18x20 frame. It's a very dense 18x20 and having used every possible string-type and hybrid config, I agree that gut/poly takes the longest to break, while also playing *solidly* throughout. The combination of elastic main and slippery cross make for a durable setup for dense patterns. I tried the same strings in a 16x19 98" last year, and they would snap in under 10 hours... it's amazing what a flexy 18x20 can do for your strings.

Loving the set up in my sig. It took a little while to get used to. At 10 hours of hitting I can say that I'm more than comfortable with this set up and am enjoying the easy power it generates on my 89 tour.

The only con was that I did feel that the string bed was powerful on the first outing. But being my first gut use I chalked it up to having to hit differently because of the pocketing of gut.

This setup is now opening up quite a bit...increased pocketing and spin, sometimes I now feel its slightly underpowered as a few balls I've hit dip pretty quick...that said it does let me hit some crazy angles...the poly crosses are a keeper as I don't notice them at all and playability is very good. Don't think I'll ever try Lux strings again tbh, great for an hour or two and that's your lot

Just bit the bullet and ordered 16L of both. (Gold Co Focus) If I like my Rip Control and my synthetic guts at 60 lbs in my EXO3 Tour 18x20 but like them best later in their lives when a little looser, where do I string each of these?

Just looking for a starting point for each. Can always adjust next setup as needed, of course.

Thanks.

Low 50s. Once you get to the mid or high 50s you lock the stringbed and reduce the spin potential.

Cool, thanks. Say 54/52 with gut mains? Or is a bigger differential generally preferred?

I've been going with a 4 lb differential. I find it allows the mains to deflect and slide a little more (more spin potential)

So you are a 5.0 and you get 70 hrs.....Wooow!!
I have to try this....
I just can't belive that you don't feel the stiffness of the Co-Focus since it is a co-poly....all the co-polies I've tried get stiff at 8 hours mark or so.
Again...I have to try this
Smasher,
How many hours out of those 70 are real match playing at 5.0 level?

I've itemized your main points to answer them more easily.

1. Yep, in my playing racket. In my teaching racket, I strung it 2lbs looser and by my best estimate I've logged on 180-200 teaching hours on it. But take that with a grain of salt because I'm not hitting some of the time and usually feeding softly for the rest.

The other thing to bear in mind is that my stick has an 89 sq" head, is pretty flexy, and has a dense string pattern. All of these combine to prolong the life of a stringjob far more than an open patterned 95+" stick. That said, I'm reasonably sure that moving up a gauge in an open stick will probably yield similar results.

2. AFAIK CoF is the most elastic copoly out there . . . Probably by a mile. This means that there won't be the stiffness you'll find with something like Tour Bite. This will make the feel a bit nicer, facilitate spin generation, and probably diminish the boardiness you speak of.

3. All of the hours on my playing frame are proper playing or practising.

There is a marvellous invention called Google.
