If you are a local teaching pro, rated 4.5, and you form a WTT team with two other 4.0 players, and one 3.5 player (who is probably good enough to be 4.0); do you play at 4.0 level or play 4.5 level?

4.0
Its about winning. If it wasn't then stick to the mixed dubs and hitting against a wall at the park and snort Cortex with poseurs. Eye of the fuching tiger. Honour. Courage. Pacific products. Pen. Towel. PaperWait = Glory

Thanks for the reply, Tim. As for "Joel", he selected 4.0. I'm glad you at least gave a response, but your commentary was superfluous.

6. DETERMINING RATINGS OF PLAYERS AND THE APPROPRIATE DIVISION FOR A TEAM:
All players must have an NTRP rating. Ratings on file with the USTA, the start of the local league, will be used. Since all sections do not use the “early start ratings”, they will not be recognized by WTT. If at the start of the local league a player does not have a rating on file with the USTA , WTT will accept a self-rating. This self-rating is subject to the approval of the local league director and the WTT National Office upon completion of a USTA Player Profile sheet.
Seems pretty clear cut to me. What are the NTRP ratings for the top two male and female members of the team in question?

josofo and beernutz both pretty much nailed it here.
There really isnt any "ethics" to question here. You have to register for the level of play your players average out to. I played the Texas WTT this summer (at 4.0) and there were several 4.5 players on 4.0 teams because those teams carried 3.5's that lowered the weighted average down. Those teams did not have any "advantage" when playing in the tournament. Even a good 3.5 is still a 3.5 regardless of if you think they should be 4.0. Remember top 3.5's are typically bottom 4.0's so unless your WTT team has really lower level 4.0's then you should have no issues competing against good 3.5's. Beauty of the WTT format is that your 4.5's dont really make a huge difference since its a team event and there are so many different formats/combinations. Sure you can stick a 4.5 at singles but then you still have doubles and mixed doubles. Sure a team can play the 4.5 on all lines but then they are gambling because your 4.5 will likely start getting tired and not play all that great. Having a 4.5 will only get you so much in the long run. I had a ton of fun doing the WTT this summer and was not bothered one bit by playing 4.5's. In fact I played a 4.5 in mens singles and had a blast. Sure I lost but I was very competitive and the singles lasted a very long time with many games going to deuce.
