Level question

Alright. So I'm 16, and I recently played a 5.0 50 year old. I beat him 6-1. What would that translate to in level? I dont need an exact number, just an estimate.

a 6.0 is almost a pro, or a college player. I don't understand how a 60 year old man could be a semi pro or a college player? Most likely old man is not 6.0

How good is the 60 year old now? (because I really doubt he is 6.0)

I get to hit with a guy who has won the wimbledon age champs in the 60s division a number of times and while he's good, he isn't a match for even a 5.0

well, a 50 year old 5.0 is a very different beast to a 60 year old 6.0, that's for sure...

you would be a 5.5 more or less I would think if that is the case.

Ive been a 4 star on tennis recruiting. I've taken about a year and half off to work on my game. Good deal.

Now that being said, on an average day it would have been more of a 6-3 set.

Well, just keep in mind that an older 5.0 might have plenty of game for 5.0 doubles, but singles is a different animal.

Ditto that. I'm sure the 50 yr. old 5.0 is very good, but I'd be willing to bet on a 5.0 team he's playing doubles only. Of course there's always the exception, I just have not seen it myself. If possible, try playing a 5.0 who is around 25-35 or so. You'll be able to better gauge your of level doing so.

Very true! I have the chance to practice with some mid 20 year old 5.0's and they are quite a bit different then the older 5.0's I've played before. Their games are so punishing, it's hard to get a footing with them unless you play them often. I've never beaten them, but I have taken a few sets off them LOL!

I'd imagine genuine 50 year old 5.0s are pretty damn rare. You would have to be an exceptional player for your technical ability to be able to make up for your physical frailty at that age.

He's in really good shape, and still moves pretty well. He played d1 college and his son played top 4 on UNCG.

Well if his son played top 4 on UNCG then he must be a great player.

I'm sure he moves okay but I'm still skeptical that even a former D1 player would be a genuine 5.0 at 50.

With only 1 set, it is tough to get a true read on your NTRP but just based on the limited data you gave, I'd have to say 5.5.

Yeah, when I first came back to the sport I was playing a guy at an old job who told me he was rates 5.0..so I thought, wow, I must be at least a 4.0 to be able to take games off him!!

Turns out he was really a 3.5 and I was a 3.0 back then, I figured this out after playing many more people with actual legitimate ratings.

Not the norm, but there are still a handful of guys over 50 who still play at a 5.0 level, especially in doubles. I know a 50+ year old that has bounced around between 5.0 and 5.5. He usually waxes guys half his age at 5.0, and many times makes it look easy.
