yea does he have to go undefeated to not lose any points (because last year he got a 500 point bonus since he didn't lose a single match)?

200 per round robin win (so up to 600 for the RR) 400 for semifinal win 500 for final win So depending on how he does in the RR, the WTF champion can get 1100, 1300 or 1500 points. |

No, Rafa secured YE#2 after Murray lost to Berdych.

" . . . A Federer semi-final victory would resonate on a number of levels. Firstly, he would become the third player to reach the final here seven or more times (Ivan Lendl reached nine finals here, Boris Becker reached eight). Secondly, he would have his 806th career match win, tying him with Stefan Edberg for sixth all-time in the Open Era (only Jimmy Connors, Lendl, Guillermo Vilas, John McEnroe and Andre Agassi have more). Thirdly, he would be the fifth player to reach 100 career tour-level finals in the Open Era (only Connors, Lendl, McEnroe and Vilas have more). Finally, and perhaps most relevant to his current situation, a win would move Federer past Andy Murray and to No. 3 on the year-end rankings - his ninth straight Top 3 year-end ranking. . . ."

If Federer wins the tournament, not only he finishes at no 3 in the world but would also be only 1400 points behind Nadal

Top 4 at the end of season:
1. Djokovic 2. Nadal 3. Federer 4. Murray Who would've backed Federer to end the year in the top 3 before Basel with Murray having a 2000+ ranking points lead at the time?

I had a strong feeling he would. After skipping the Asian swing, I just knew Fed would be well rested and fresh as a daisy for the year end tournaments. He usually is. The other 3 had either picked up injuries or were tired and jaded or both!

What is the record for straight top 3 finishes? Connors in 5?
Also, I don't really see Federer regaining no. 2 behind Nadal. In order to do so, he'll probably need to win the AO, which will most likely consist of either beating Nadal in a Slam, or Djokovic and then Murray back to back. That is unlikely to happen, so unless he finds himself in a half with Ferrer or someone beating the other of the big 4, it seems unlikely. Win 1 match against them out of 5 sets, yes. But two in a row? Not likely anymore. |

Since Basel, Roger has accumulated 2,500 points up to now. And can add 500 more if he win on Sunday, that's a total of 3,000. Pretty good for an indoor season.
