Default I think we can all at least agree Ferrer tanked the third set v. Berdych

And why shouldn't he have? If was the smart move. Since he already qualified for the semis, there was no point in battling it out with Berdych knowing he'd have to play a MUST WIN match the very next day.

Good move.

No doubt Ferrer wanted to win this match... but in two sets. When he lost the second, he knew it was more important to conserve energy for tomorrow... so he tanked.

There have been a lot of threads, some serious and some in jest, about players tanking, etc. But can we at least all agree that Ferrer definitely tanked in the third set?

And don't hate me, I'm just trying to get some consensus in these forums! Everyone's always at each other's throats around here... let us agree as one for once!

I'm not a fan of either, but I would definitely say Ferrer was conserving his energy for Federer in the semis.

The only game Ferrer won in the last set was when Berdych made 3 UEs in a row.

I don't think it will matter in the long run. The odds of Ferrer beating Fed are very low, rested or not. Federer has been on fire this whole tournament and there are no indications that he's going to stop.

Yes, tanked. Hi countryman and the world #1 set a bad example for him. I've watched this tournament for decades (under various names) and don't remember top players slithering out like this before. Really, really bad form.

he didn't tank, what are you stupid?

He'd rather face Tsonga than Federer, especially right here, right now.

Maybe when he went down a double break he lost his fight, but no way Ferrer tanked this match. He would much rather play Tsonga than Federer. Berdych took over that match in the second set and wouldn't let go and there was nothing Ferrer could do about it. When 6'5", 200 lbs. Berdych is on, 5'9", 160 lbs. Ferrer can only hope the damage is minimal.

An aggressive baseliner defines his fate. If the winner/unforced error is favorable he wins the match. If not, it can be an errorfest and he will lose.

Also, when I hear the word tank I think losing on purpose. Is that what you guys mean? I find it hard to believe that any of these top 8 competitors would ever lose on purpose. That's not how they became the top 8.

as BigForehand said, this would be a dumb idea. If he won the match he would play Tsonga, instead he plays Federer.

but Berdych was fighting for his life in this match, what if they ended playing in a third set tie breaker with Berdych winning 10-8 after a total of 3 hours+ of play?

Better rested against Federer (at least he has a fighting chance if Federer is off) than exhausted against Tsonga (where 99,9% he would lose given that movement is Ferrer's biggest advantage)

If the 3rd set was a tank, then that means Ferru and Berdie only played TWO sets and thus are not tired as is being suggested.

So maybe Fed and Tsonga are tired from their exhaaaaaausting 3 setters. Roger snatched victory from the jaws of defeat vs Fish.

Tanksgiving is not celebrated in the UK.

I agree with this, not with the OP.

the difference is that by winning the third set, ferrer may have expended more energy, but he certainly would have not had to play federer and would have a much higher chance of getting into the final.

Macy's midnight sale was disappointing. Sports authority 5 am sale was better. Got a $25 card but was hoping fr $500. But their buy one get the second half off minus the $25 worked well for new Barricades.

OP, this is incorrect. Ferrer is a veteran and an athlete. He knew what his chances, rested or not, vs. Federer were, compared to Tsonga.
