Default Orange Bowl - 14's

Hi. I am just wondering who went and saw matches.
What were their thoughts?

I saw Koslov play.
He is smaller than I thought he would be, but a great player.
I definitely think he could be a pro player.
That was the only highlight of the tournament.

Other than that, I thought it was a poorly run tournament.

Cheating like I have never seen.

Rude parents screaming at other players in front of the refs.

I am wondering if the same rules for USTA tournaments apply to this tournament?

I was there, at Crandon Park....was impressed with Tornado, Stewart, & Sleevicia (sp?)... Saw some good tennis, and at Crandon it was run very well...all of the 1st & 2nd round matches were chaired....with chair calling all the lines, no problem with parents, or players.

Yes, I was told that all the girl's tournaments had chair coaches
as they were doing a training seminar for coaches,
and used that as a teaching venue.

Is that correct?

That all the tournaments had chair coaches for the girls?

I was there and saw very few flare-ups. If you think Kozlov was the only highlight, you didn't get to see everyone play. It's difficult to say who is going to be a pro at 14. Pierce is so raw...best athlete in the tournament.

I was more surprised by Koslov as he is on the short side, but he is really good.

Completely agree with you. Kozlov always seems to have one more shot...competes extremely hard and his tennis IQ is off the charts. But, I believe the gap is beginning to narrow as some of the top kids are starting to mature physically. It's fun to watch.

That and he is fearless. He's got a steely nerve.

I didn't see the matches, but was impressed to see Borna Coric doing reasonably well in the B18s (he made the quarters.) At just-turned-15, he's ranked only nine positions lower than Gianluigi Quinzi, who is almost a year older.

Oh yeah, Coric glides around the court. He has great anticipation, looks like a little pro moving around the court.

Do you think he'll be too small to do really well? He looks small compared to his opponents. On the other hand, he also looks as though he will still grow quite a bit.

He just turned 15 a month ago so he still has plenty of time for some growth spurts. There are some You Tube videos of him, very fluid looking player.

Growth spurts for boys are from 13-15 and earlier for girls. There are always exceptions to the rule but don't count on anything major happening.

We shall see but you are probably right. With active boys the growth can continue up to age 17-19. He could grow only another 1-2 inches....or 8 inches, no one really knows.
