Smile Shelf Life of Strings??

Hey Everybody,

Does anyone have an opinion on whether strings will "go bad" if they just sit around on a shelf? This is assuming that the storage conditions are temperature controlled. What about different types of string?

My guess is that polys are not affected but maybe syn gut or multi's may be affected?

Thanks!

Jack

I honestly think that strings may go bad! However it is interesting the Natural Gut I just put in my racket was from 1995 string feels good will see if it breaks faster though!

Nylon strings are affected by UV as well as heat.
Natural gut is affected by humidity or lack thereof.
Other than that, they have almost the shelf life of SPAM.

I have a few packs of Pacific Tough Gut "Copper".

Apparently it has been out of production for about 3+ years.

I strung some up in a full bed over the winter, and it is playing better than all my other racquets right now (so good that I've put in an enormous swath of string savers to keep it alive, only using it for doubles). Amazing touch and control.

So, if packaged correctly (ahh the point of my story), gut seems to hold for a good time on the shelves (Pacific is sealed in foil packaging that seems to work well keeping the bad stuff out and good stuff in). Yes, scientific explanation, I know ;\
