From wiki: Mathieu is known for being able to hit heavy groundstrokes from both wings and his topspin forehand is probably his biggest weapon. A relatively popular, well-liked player despite his inconsistent career results

A knee injury took him out of the game last year if I'm not mistaken. Shame, I really enjoy watching Mathieu play.

He had a major knee injury and had issues with lingering pain and stiffness after the surgery.....he has been going thru major rehab and pain management for over a year. He has stated in the French press recently that his knee has stopped hurting finally and he went on a new fitness regimen to get a bit lighter and take stress off the joint and move better.

Incredible come back. I remember DelPo struggling his first few matches after his long injury break, but Matthieu is back with a blast

2006 French Open, Round of 32. Nadal won 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4, with the match lasting 4 hours and 53 minutes. It was Nadal's 56th win in a row on clay.

That's how long. Could be that I really started paying attention to players outside the top 15 since 2010, so that might explain it. Even then, he was in those ranks. I'm amazed he flew under my radar too. Happens I guess. |
