Smile how fast can you run 1 mile?

i am 45 and a 4.5 player in reasonably good shape, i have recently been trying to improve my time for 1 mile. I can currently run it in about 7 minutes but my goal is to get under 6 minutes.

i am curious to know about others out there and their ages and times in the mile and what ntrp rating you are?

6 minutes flat in college. Probably 7:30 these days, but I haven't tried a full 4 laps in a while.

Late 30's for me and a 3.5 player. I stand about 5'10" and 160lbs. In high school, I could run 5 flat but the most recent time for me was 3 years ago at about 8:30. I could probably do 7:30 since I'm in better shape now. To get under 6 minutes, spend a couple months working up to it and do interval drills the right way. No slacking off. Eating sensibly helps a lot too. I find that intervals and 100-200m sprint repeats about twice a week kick up your speed quite a bit. If you wanted to run a 10k, I'd give you different advice.

Out of curiosity, is this just for personal fulfillment? Timed mile runs don't seem to translate well into tennis. It's a game of short bursts of rapid acceleration.

3.0-3.5. I'm not a tennis player, I'm a weightlifter.

thanks for you input... i would like to gently disagree with you, i think there is a strong correlation between overall fitness and the potential you have to play tennis at higher levels.... i know there will be exceptions but i seriously doubt there will be many 5.0+ players who cannot run a mile in under 6minutes. there are short bursts but for me to raise my overall level of fitness and my mental strength i must get my time under 6minutes.

6:20 last week, personal best was 5:52 in college. i'm not really much on shorter distance runs (1 milers, 5ks), I prefer long distance running (half and full marathons). Although if they put a racquet in my hand and dropped a tennis ball about a mile away, I could probably get to it even faster. I'm more like Jerry Rice, running a 4.7 on the track, a 4.3 on the field.

26, 178 lbs, 5'10
3.0-3.5, depends on the wind and how low the net is or how the wind is blowing...

iam 56 1 mile 7:30. in tennis you need quickness and good reovery. high intensity interval workouts are most beneficial. distance is for stamina. an elite tennis would run a sub 6 minute mile because to be elite you have to be in the upper levle of athletic ability and fit. however traing to run a 6 minute mile doesnt train you for the metabolic demands of tennis the short burst short recovery workouts would imho

well i have been playing tennis for 20 years so i have the ability to move quickly in short bursts. i really believe that i am onto something here with trying to get my time under 6:00- strong legs and movement are critical to success in tennis.. if you reply to this post please let me know A) your current time to run 1mile- dont guess, i thoght i would be much better than i actually was...go out to a track with a stopwatch and see how hard it is to break 6mins if you havnt been training. B) your age and C) your ntrp level?

i am really curious if any legitimate 5.0+ players (pretty close to college level and up) cannot break 6minutes... im guessing most are closer to 5minutes.

Thumbs up Time

My fastest time was 5:20 at 185 22 years old. My last time I checked my mile time I ran 6:02 at 209 37 years old. I would have run faster but I did a 106mile bike race (20mph average) two days before I ran my mile and didn't have my hr unit to measure my hr. I ran the first 3 laps easy then ran a faster final lap. My goal was to run a 5 min mile when I was younger. I could run 5 min mile for 3 laps on the track then poop on the last lap and run a 5:20. I wish I was into running in HS when I my weight was 138-158 during those 4 years. I am sure I could have gone sub five or aleast 5 flat. I was into cycling and hockey at the time oh well.

My best ever was 5:03 during high school when I ran Cross Country. At the One One run in January (before the back problem had occurred) I clocked 6:07 for a mile split. My overall for 2.2 miles was 12:57.

I have no idea what my NTRP rating is.

I can play 5.0 and not get close to sub 6:00 min mile. The % of human beings running -6min miles is very, very low.

CM, believe it or not I ran a 4:30 my senior year in HS....I weighed all of 130 pounds. The last time I timed myself I ran a 7:30 ! I guess the 29 years and the 60 pounds takes a toll.

interesting...when you say you 'can play 5.0' does this mean you are a legitimate 5.0player who is close to college level? also, what is your age?
thanks!!!

I played 5.5 and a bit of college a few years ago. Admittedly my fitness isn't at it's best, but I can play 5.0. I played a 4.5 match last nite and won 0-2, but I was serving like 90% 1st serves and hitting some pretty good shots.

I am 37. In 05' I could run back to back -6 min miles... once and throwed up for like 15 min's. I actually ran a 7-8 minute mile first, rested 1.5 min and ran.

Yeah i could see someone with a big serve and great strokes being a bit out of shape and still playing at a good level
