Default What caused the downfall of Andy Roddick?

I am new to the tennis world so please don't be too brutal. I was just wondering what happened to make him fall in the rankings so much?

Thanks

Recently? Injuries.

Since 2005? Becoming a defensive player.

Firing Brad. The end. Although if you mean just right now he is getting old and would be in decline by this point anyway.

That, and injuries. Although I'd have a hard time training if I woke up next to her every day...

I'm surprised that the first response is not the usual generic and inane "Brooklyn Decker!lol. He does not care about tennis anymore"

If anything, Roddick played his best tennis in years after getting married in 2009.

I think he is in a sharp physical decline. He plays one tight match and he is injured the next day.

I actually think it was Roddick's game which exposed him. Yah weaknesses made a huge dent, but that seems pretty natural with age and hard hitters.

Roddick did better when he was a pure hard hitter, banging his forehand and serve as much as possible. But then he started to hit rallies a bit more, and that to me exposed the fact that his groundstrokes did not hold up against top players.

Once he started to rally more, he then didn't hit as hard anymore, and players which had a stronger foundation of strokes frustrated him. I mean his backhand was never a beauty.

I'd say getting rid of Brad Gilbert.

He fired the guy soon after winning the USO, and hasn't really been close since except that Wimbledon 2009 run.

Larry Stefanki got him in shape, but I'd be hard pressed to say anything else.

At least Connors got him sorta back into attacking for a while.

Roddick fired Gilbert in December 2004, so 15 months after winning the 2003 US Open. As 2005 went on, Roddick's forehand softened and became less of a weapon, and in 2006, it was getting really weak. Roddick's backhand improved well with Connors, but the forehand has remained sporadic at best.

How about...not being able to win any more Grand Slams. After a while, I can see how someone could get discouraged.

Did his backhand really improve? Everyone says this but it went from being a 50-50 weapon shot, where his winners would cancel out his unforced errors usually, to a pusher shot where he made no winners or unforced errors. Is one really better than the other?

IMO, he was still playing well up until the spring of 2010 when he made back to back finals in IW and Miami (won one, lost one). Then he picked up some injuries and a bad bout of Mono and has struggled to recapture any kind of form ever since. The last time I really saw him playing consistently well was at 2011 Memphis when he beat Milos Raonic in the final. I think that was the last title he won.
Since then, it's been rapidly downhill. The last good match I saw from him was in Miami this year when he roused himself to beat Federer but, typically, he couldn't maintain form for the next round. He's been off since with even more injuries.

Age and fitness are obviously now very much against him but I wouldn't put it past him to get fit and motivated again for at least one more good season before he packs it in for good. I hope he will but whether or not he will be capable of doing that he has had a career that no tennis player could be ashamed of:

Slam Finals = 5, won 1.
Masters Finals = 9, won 5.
ATP500 Finals = 8, won 5.
ATP250 Finals = 28, won 19.
Total Finals = 50, won 30.

World #1 = 13 weeks (2003-4).

No matter what you say, any tennis player would kill to have that career.

A combination of factors made Roddick less effective but the biggest was his change in mentality in how he approaches the court - he went from a proactive baseliner to a modern, reactive baseliner and as the linked article explains, you can understand how Roddick hasn't hugely benefited from this!

However at times he has been sensational - his match against Federer this year at Miami was Roddick at his best!

He now has a better slice, but injuries, age and a dedication to fitness at only a very late age have cost him dearly.

Ultimately, anything bad that has ever happened to Roddick can be traced back to Federer.

True, cause Federer leads 21-3 head to head with Roddick and i think 3 or 4 of those wins were at slam finals. But yeah its inevitable that tennis players will decline in their late 20's.
