Default Any near ocean NTRP tournaments worth traveling for?

Landlocked in Minneapolis, wouldn't mind taking a trip and playing a tournament somewhere near the ocean, thinking SC, NC, FL, that type of thing. If I lose, I hit the beach; if I win, I still hit the beach, just happier. Upper level 4.0.

Include a tournament link if it's in July, August, Sept.

Trying to get a buddy to go with.

This isn't a sanctioned USTA tournament, but it is a great event. There is an open draw and a B draw. The B draw is mostly 3.5-4.5 league players and local high school kids. The open draw is a cash prize tournament with qualifying rounds. The open draw is current and former college players, top ranked juniors, local teaching pros, and sometimes even former satellite level players. It's great to play the B and then watch the open matches. Last year, the open was won by Chris Chirico, who was a top junior who played internationally and in junior grand slam tournaments, but then went to Texas and never really made it in college tennis. He now coaches a high school team locally around here. The tournament is about an hour from the beach (Jersey Shore, LOL).

Here is the link to last year's B draw:

Dang, that's a big draw. That would be fun if but thinking more South and beachy. Plus I don't need The Situation breaking my arm pre-match.

Thanks for replying though, maybe others can use the info.

If you play near the coast be prepared to play in windy conditions.

Look up places like Charleston, or Hilton Head for South Carolina on tennislink. Both have a fair amount of tennis and both places are really nice.

are some July and August Florida jobs, and this lists some September options: http://tennislink.usta.com/TOURNAMEN...=&Sanctioned=0 (now see that you'll have to switch from January to September up top to get the right list - love the "preview post" option)

Just be sure and have somebody ready with a video camera to capture the ambulance carting yer Minnesota *** off to the hospital when that Florida summer heat and humidity gets a holt of it. But, keep to the east coast as the diving is better over yonder.

Here's one near Charleston: http://tennislink.usta.com/TOURNAMEN....aspx?T=122611

And here's one where you can see how things are coming along near ground zero from Katrina a few years back: http://tennislink.usta.com/TOURNAMEN....aspx?T=116484

Another Charleston area tourny: http://tennislink.usta.com/TOURNAMEN....aspx?T=111772

Some good tennis folk up in the Myrtle Beach area: http://tennislink.usta.com/TOURNAMEN....aspx?T=111619 and http://tennislink.usta.com/TOURNAMEN....aspx?T=110635

Kiawah Island is very nice, though rather isolated: http://tennislink.usta.com/TOURNAMEN....aspx?T=123044

And Fripp Island is *really* isolated: http://tennislink.usta.com/TOURNAMEN....aspx?T=111080

My bias would be toward the Florida beaches. Sounds like a solid plan - tennis and beach. . .

This is a really nice tournament in Gulfport, MS. Although it is near the Gulf of Mexico and not the ocean, there is a nice beach and awesome casinos.

Lived in Fort Lauderdale for 3 years, honestly it's about the same in Minnesota as Southern Florida in the middle of summer.

It's tough to play in Florida without being near a beach. Even if you play one in land-locked Orlando, you're 90 minutes max from a world class beach.

Florida geography tip...Atlantic side has more beaches than the Gulf side, panhandle aside.

those are good ones. i can speak to the myrtle tourneys - they tend to be well attended and well run. they draw a lot of sc and out of state folks usually. the higher the level (most points) the more likely for a large draw. lot's to do for family members in addition to tennis in all of those locations.
disclosure - i am a member of prestwick, one of the tournaments listed.

If you decide to come to one of the Myrtle tournaments (particularly the Prestwick one), let me know. We have at least one other Minnesota guy we keep around!

bumping this.

this tournament: http://tennislink.usta.com/TOURNAMEN....aspx?T=110635
is now registering. usually has good attendance and a nice time of year for tennis in south carolina. it is a SC L1 and Southern 300pt tourney so usually brings in a lot of people from out of the area.

let me know if you guys decide to come down!
