Default Singles vs. Double Wild Card or low ranking players

I have noticed over the past couple of years, either some wild cards or lower ranked team in doubles would have a deep run in the tournament and even win it (Wimby 2012). What happens to all doubles specialists?

This has happened with other tournaments as well, IW, Miami, AO, FO.

I don't watch much doubles but what is your take on it.
