Why, because I haven't posted in a few days?

Either way, I found a really good way to lose weight which I think everyone should try. If you play, let's say, 3 times a week, why don't you add a UFC/Boxing workout to the non-tennis days? That is what I will do starting tomorrow.

You must believe everything the government tells you, yes? It isn't a conspiracy-- the reasons for it are complicated, but yes, big business tends to collude with politicians.

Or this quack, right? http://www.childrenshospital.org/cfa...ageS114P0.html With his widely successful program? http://www.childrenshospital.org/cli...geS1896P0.html

Who just published this quackery in no other than the Journal of the American Medical Association http://jama.jamanetwork.com/article....icleid=1199154

^^ Ummmm, "no other than" as if this is impressive? When you've been around the medical profession a few more decades you'll learn that JAMA is where you publish when NEJM, Lancet, and (for really important work) Science have turned you down. Marginal poster presentations from the annual AMA meeting wind up as publications in JAMA. It's not a terribly prestigious place to publish.

I don't disagree. I said "no other than" because we were discussing the AMA's complicity in the issue.

The point is, there are centers dedicated to this idea and there is research being published in the field; it isn't limited to one "quack" named Gary Taubes.

I've always been a fan of carbs and protien and fat, veggies and fruit, alchohol and pizza, water and fiber...hmm and tennis all in moderation. It's done me well. Figure I'll keep it up until it stops working. I'll have to bookmark this thread, and revisit the eph/AO arguments if I get fat and need to change my lifestyle.

That reminds me, it's time for my once a day grapenuts/turkey/avacado/pistacio/strawberry/carrot/pizza/rice/fettucine alfredo/captain crunch/twinkie wiener sandwich. It's the only thing that goes with a good scotch now-a-days. It's all good though, I put it on a whole grain wheat bun with some mayonnaise. It's a great mid-match pick me up and slides right down.

I was contemplating some garlic, so then I'd just be some tomatoes and onions away!

Since nobody took the golden opportunity already: As a tennis player you should always abstain from eating bagels and breadsticks.

Simple, consume 2000 calories a day following the food pyramid. Carbs aren't bad as you need them to fuel the body just don't over eat in carbs cause it takes up a lot of your daily calories, pro's will eat pasta with no sauce to fuel themselves for their match. Controlled portions, eat less, but more frequently. Exercise, you'll find that you eat more but its cause your body is telling you it needs more gas. This is where people go wrong and eat whatever to keep them full but in actuality being hungry frequently is you increasing your metabolism. After your exercise drink a protein shake to fuel the body or else it'll eat at your muscles. I take Wheybolic as it's more for the goal of being lean. Unlike the regulat Whey protein that gets your bulky.

I'm sorta in the same boat as you OP my daily diet is

Breakfast - Chobani Mango Yogurt
Snack - 1 slice wheat bread with turkey or thin spread of peanut butter
Lunch - 6 inch subway oven roasted on 9 grain wheat no sauce just veggies and salt and pepper
Snack - 1 slice wheat bread with turkey or thin spread of peanut butter
Dinner - the other half of that foot long oven roasted

I try to eat every 3 hours or so.

Cut out all soda's, fruit juices, and little or no sports drink. Drink 2 cups of water before every meal, it'll help keep you eat less and keep you full as well as give you your daily water intake.

I use to be 210 and now I'm around 190 trying to get 180 or 185. I lift weights, heaviest I can, not to be too big, but it helps burn more calories as well as strengthens my muscles. Or you can do less weights more reps. Your choice.

oh man, this thread has the potential to be even better than the Paleo thread in the health section.

No carb diet? None at all? Awesome.

its pretty simple really:

1) take bcaa's and "nitro blast 3000" before a match to ensure you have the energy you need. no water. no sports drinks. you can drink chocolate milk if you want

2) drink a protein shake after the match. and like jakesteroni says above, be careful to drink the right type so you don't get bulky.

3) try to eat as few carbs as possible at meals / snacks. zero carbs is ideal, but 50 grams or less a day will probably be ok.

4) for training, you want to be squatting 2.5x your bodyweight. i'd also do HIIT training 1 or 2 times a week. sprint for 10 yards, then rest for two minutes. do 5 sets of these. this mimics what you do on court.

5) finally, do not, i repeat, DO NOT wear sunscreen. ask the poster above (Fee). she developed cancer and nearly died from the chemicals in sunscreen. also, by not wearing sunscreen, you shouldn't need to take vitamin D supplements (but I do anyway, just to be safe)

good luck

It's not reasonable? Did he ask for reasonable suggestions or did he ask "What to avoid eating as a tennis player?" Okay, you want reasonable: keep your carb consumption under 50 grams a day for two weeks then cut out all carbs completely.

The safest and most beneficial supplement to your diet would be CLA...conjugated linoleic acid promotes the breakdown of fat in a totally safe manner. I lost 30 pounds in less than six months as a result of moderate exercise, sensible eating and one CLA pill with each meal daily. CLA can also be found naturally in grass-fed beef and dairy products from grass-fed livestock. It's fairly inexpensive in the supplemental pill format and is stocked at most vitamin outlets.

As to the "carb war" posts...there are good carbs and bad carbs but no carbs is a very bad thing. Read the Zone system literature to find sensible advice on proper fueling of the body...a 40/30/30 combo of protein/carbs/fat is ideal for any active person. Good fats are absolutely necessary in a diet as they are the way we store energy. Carbs are the catalyst for burning said fats. If you don't have the proper proportions of good carbs and fat, your body will start breaking down protein for energy and that's a very bad thing.
