Novak's new logo has a good concept, which is a bird in flight (freedom), Greek letter's alpha (number 1), a tennis ball and a medieval serbian initial; but overall, the logo just look awkward and a bit negative...

I watched the video about it on Djokovic's site. My opinion on design and logos is if you have to explain their elements then they're probably not very well designed.
It seems to lack the effortless styling/fit that good logos have and it's also not immediately obvious enough what it is comprised of (Djokovic's initials) unless you already know what it is.

but good analysis 15 ounce. it's good that there's a sense of movement about it, and it reminds me of a parabolic path of a tennis ball in flight, sort of, but like you pointed out, it does have a negative movement about it. also, i dont think the different elements they are trying to incorporate are coexisting well enough together.

to go along with what you said about compact, and firm:
i'm not a big fan of the RF logo and i don't like how nike sticks it on everything federer even if it doesn't go well with the gear, but i do feel they designed a good logo. they kept it simple, nothing extra, together, great lines and movement, and able to say alot about the federer/his market through the typeface they use.

It's not self-explanatory enough. Federer's letters and Nadal's symbol, both obvious.
