Default Murray: Loss in Wimby final will only make me more determined

It is hard to describe the disappointment of losing a Grand Slam final, let alone as a British player at Wimbledon with such incredible home support.

You try to stay calm, hold it together and congratulate your opponent before thanking the fans, your team, the tournament staff and so on.

If only it was that easy.

Having invested so much effort and received unbelievable backing, it is difficult to control your reaction. The last thing you want is to cry on court, but there we go.

That's the spirit Andy!

I don't know what to think of this guy now. English players are always the most painful to watch: they will always disappoint.

Well he's British or Scottish, he's not an English player either way. However compared to say Henman I definitely think he isn't disappointment, Henman was never this close to winning a slam (he did have some nice runs at Wimbledon though, 2001 was his golden chance), Murray's in a different class in that regard.

I think Murray's first slam will come in 2013 AO though winning the first here in Wimbledon with Lendl as his coach would have made for a far better story.

Really glad to see him come out of this one fighting. I don't think he'll have the same slump he's had after the past two slam finals. Perversely, because this one was so close and more crushing, he'll recover from it more quickly. The last 3 were over so quickly, and he played so badly, but this time he fought until the end, and must surely believe now more than ever that he can win that first grand-slam. Go Andy!

Nice article. I hope he doesn't stew on this loss, and really can just take the positives out of it. He really should just be proud of his achievements, and not feel like he's let anyone down, because he hasn't.

Also, nice to see him giving props to Lendl, as he's made a noticeable improvement to Murray's mental approach.

I just got the feeling that whatever Murray would have thrown, Federer would have come back with more. To more or less quote Andy Roddick a few years ago "I threw the kitchen sink at him and he came back me with with the bath tub".

However, Murray can be very proud of what he has acheived. The pressure and intensity the British public create is unbelievable and he did us proud. Being the runner-up to a player who is still beating his own grand slam records holds no shame.

I hope Murray does win a slam and this tournament has proven that Nadal and Djokovic are beatable.

I think he will.

I am a big Murray fan but struggle to see him winning a slam. I did think Henman had a real shot of winnning Wimbly, never felt that with Andy

I'm a big fan as well, and I'm more confident now than I was a year ago. Last year he was looking good against Nadal and then missed a sitter and let it get to him and he basically left the game mentally for about a set. After that I didn't even bother watching him at the US Open, and was pretty sure he wouldn't ever win a slam.

However, It's all changed now that he decided to address his mental approach, and get Lendl on board. In the first two sets yesterday, he showed he can really can rise to the challenge in a Slam Final.

The key is I think he is realising that to win a Slam Final you cannot go into it being overwhelmed by the fear of losing. He let all it out, and played great for two sets. Unfortunately, Federer went into God Mode after the break, and Murray came out looking emotionally and physically drained.

As long as injuries aren't an issue, he will win a Slam IMO.

Weird mate, I felt the opposite about Tim. Always hoped he'd do it but never thought he had a genuine shot.

I've came this far - I'm not giving up on Andy just yet - I think he has spent a couple of years flatlining, but I see genuine improvement in his overall game under Ivan.

Tell me about that man. I have been supporting English football team from 1986 onwards and they have always disappointed me, both in Euro as well as World Cup. I am sure they will disappoint me in 2014 also..

On the topic, I am sure that Andy Murray will win slams. I felt this after the AO 2011 semi final against Novak. It's gonne happen soon

I console myself with the belief that the journey is better than the destination. Happiness is the road, as Marillion say!

I think that certainly in 2010/2011 there wasn't too much progress - I mean, he was already a great player. But you're certainly right that he's come on a lot since Ivan came on board. He was awesome in Australia and was great again at Wimbledon. Roll on Flushing Meadows! It's his favourite tournament, he's got to have a great shot.

Don't really see how Andy did better than before. Didn't he get this far because Nadal was knocked out? If that doesn't happen next year then Nadal will just take him out again assuming they are again in the same half.

I'm personally not a Murray fan, but after this Wimbledon, I have a new found respect for him (not to say I didn't respect him before). There were times when his work with Lendl truly shown through - He played aggressively, and wasn't visibly a mental maniac. This was especially prevalent in the first set in which he won. He wasn't pusher Andy, and it was a lot more refreshing to watch.

However, as the match went on, it seemed he started going back to the Andy Murray of old. Playing the safe first serves, playing more high percentage tennis, etc., and well, we see how it turned out. I think his partnership with Lendl bear some fruit earlier than both probably expected, and I hope he gets to the point where the discussion is the big 4 instead of the big 3.

Well, he won a set in a Slam Final for the first time for starters.

In the article he states - "I'm starting to handle certain situations better than I might have done in the past." Most people who've followed his career would probably agree with this. In the biggest match of his life, he managed to play a couple of sets of tennis close to his very best, rather than being overwhelmed and trying to play it safe, as he'd done in the previous 3 slam finals.

Rafa was also absent in 2009 and Murray wasn't able to make final.

With regards to Nadal taking him out, I'd have no problem with it as long as Murray can show the improved mental toughness he's shown yesterday and against Djokovic in the Aussie Open Semi. You'd just have to give props to the better guy on the day winning.

i think another key point for Andy is how much trouble he has against worse opposition. He lost sets to Karlovic (can happen), Baghdatis (shouldn't happen), Tsonga, and worst of all.. not only did he lose a set to Ferrer, but he was on court for like forever, playing average rallies of 50 shots. That's gonna hurt him down the road. He needs to kill more points, make sure he's not on the back foot so much, take the ball early etc. Murray played a great tournament, but in some ways, if you aren't roger Federer in GOD mode, and make only 10 or 15 ue's in a gs final first 3 sets, maybe you should even go for slightly more on your shots.

I hate to say it but I think if Nadal played exactly the same way vs Murray as he did vs Rosol, he'd have beaten Murray in the semis.
