Who's been the best of the rest?
The "Big 4" (or rather the "Big 3" and Murray for now) have occupied the top 4 slots in the rankings for the majority of almost 4 years now. During that time, a select group of talented players (listed below) have challenged them and were ranked in the top 5 or 6 at some point or another. Who's been the best among them since the current top 4 established their order?
Nikolay Davydenko: He beat Federer and Nadal at the 2010 WTF and again in 2011 Doha. He has since been falling in the rankings. Spent 24 weeks in the top 5 since Murray reached #4 Andy Roddick: Defeated Murray at 2009 Wimbledon, almost beat Federer in the finals. He also defeated Djokovic at AO 2009. Spent a total of 8 weeks at #5 since Murray reached #4. David Ferrer: Now seems to be the consistent #5 player in the world. Beat Nadal at the 2010 AO and Murray at 2012 RG. Spent 38 weeks in the top 5 since Murray reached #4. Jo Wilfried Tsonga: Only player to have beaten Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic in majors. He possibly has the best game among all the players in this list when he's on fire. Spent a total of 11 weeks at #5 since Murray reached #4. Tomas Berdych: Made the 2010 Wimbledon finals, defeating Federer along the way. Possibly the best FH+BH combo in this list, but he is yet to reach the top 5 in the rankings. Robin Soderling: He is the only player to beat Nadal at the French Open (2009) and ended Federer's streak of consecutive SF (RG 2010). He has made 2 major finals, the most of anyone on this list since Murray climbed up to #4. He has spent a total of 55 weeks in the top 5 (including a considerable stint at #4) since Murray broke into the top 4. However, he has since fallen off the rankings due to illness. Juan Martin del Potro: Only player to have won a major in this list (2009 USO) during the given time period, where he defeated Nadal and Federer in back to back matches. Defeated Federer again at the 2009 WTF. He dropped down in rankings as a result of injuries but is steadily climbing back. He spent 45 weeks ranked in the top 5, with a few weeks at #4. David Ferrer the guy is so consistent....he defintly the best of the rest for the last 2 years.
Though Roddick is the best overall in that group. 8-10 years in year end top ten....that is ridonkulous.

The best, most consistent performer has been ferrer. I think Tsonga's better, but he can be streaky at times.

Since 2008, Del Potro. The only only to break through and win a slam.
Consistency wise, hard to argue against Ferrer. Tsonga has been good too! |

In terms of rankings at least, Tsonga has arguably been more consistent than Ferrer over the last 4 years. Ferrer dropped out of the top 20 for 5 weeks around July 2009. He didn't return back to the top 10 until September 2010.
Tsonga dropped out of the top 20 for 2 weeks in 2008 and another week in 2011, but has been quick to get back to the top 10 each time. Roddick also had been more consistent until this year (at or near the top 10), when he dropped out of the top 30. |

consistency-wise deffo ferrer. no competition.
tsonga, delpo, berdych have had better runs tho playing better tennis for short periods of time. which is why they are more dangerous for the top 4 if they show up in form. and also why they have a slight outside chance to sneak out a major at some point. cant see that happening for ferrer ever |

Ferrer for sure, especially considering the fact that he is a small guy with a big heart. All other players in this poll have bigger weapons but Pics is something else. I have so much respect for him.

I would have to say Nadal. I know, I know what you will all say:
"But dudeski Nadal didn't even make the 3rd round of the last major, how can he be considered top 10?". Well I have a feeling that he will do better next time, ok. Just trust me on that one! |

Probably Tsonga. Ferrer's probably been more consistent, and Del Potro's reached the highest peak, but Tsonga's got the best mix between the two.

With all due respect for Ferrer and his determination combined with an incredible fighting spirit, but he doesn't even have an ATP1000 masters win in his bag.
Which is why I have to go with the guy who holds a major. Juan Martin Del Potro.

Look at his head to head with the other players on this list: 7-4 vs. Davydenko 4-2 vs. Roddick 10-4 vs. Ferrer 5-0 vs. Tsonga 7-3 vs. Berdych 1-4 vs. Del Potro The only one who has a winning H2H is Del Potro, who you could argue with Robin as the best since he does have the slam win. However since that slam he hasn't been more consistent than the others on this list, whereas Soderling was firmly entrenched as the number 5 player for a while before the mono hit. I believe he'd still be top 5 right now and making deep runs in slams if he didn't get sick. I suppose the easy pick is Ferrer, as on paper he's been up there for quite a while whereas Robin and Juan have been hit by injuries. But I still say Robin. |
