In my area (NorCal) home teams get to pick the date/time for matches... so it's all over the place... we have some matches on Sat, some on Sun, and some on weeknights, all depending on the home team's court availability.

I agree, this is the worst thing about league. No show defaults are taken very seriously in tournaments (I think in norcal it earns you an immediate 30 day suspension and 8 of 10 points toward a year suspension). But in league, a "no show" default isn't penalized any worse than a default announced well in advance, so there's an incentive to wait until the last minute to default a line!

The most frustrating part that I observe is the vast difference in skill levels among self-rated players (i.e., some players who play two levels are winning by a wide margin at the higher level), which is perpetuated by the fact that only spring leagues count toward ratings. As a result, players can play summer and fall leagues only, win consistently and continue to be self-rated at the lower level year after year.
Self-rating is a bit of a joke. We won the city at 4.0 a few years ago with 2 kids playing singles. They were both between 23-25 years old and right out a Div 3 tennis program. They didn't lose thru regular season and playoffs.

We had 4 players bumped to 4.5 that season - the kids plus 2 others.

Funny thing is the team we beat in the city finals had 7 players bumped to 4.5 and their 1 singles was about 25 years old and had been a junior national champion in Brazil.

I was not the captain and had nothing to do with bringing the kids on to the team but lots of our opposition complained. One of the kids was DQed for the state finals.
