Default Forehand - Elbow close to rib cage or away?

Should the hitting elbow be relatively close to your rib cage or somewhat away from it when hitting a forehand? I normally lay my wrist back and lock it and swing from the shoulder keeping my arm bent and one even flow as I come up through the ball. I am open for suggestions/tips on the swing and elbow position!
