Exclamation Nadal and hyper-expensive items

I was looking around on the Yahoo! articles, and it showed Nadal wearing a $690,000 Richard Mille sport watch.

Apparently, it's basically one of those sporting bands that people wear on their wrist or something like that. It's supposed to 'work in situations of up to 5000 Gs of force'.

Here's a picture. The guy beside him is Sergio Garcia. Bubba Watson, the 2012 Masters Champion wears a similar watch that's $525,000.

I will never buy a watch that's worth over $1,000. There's an endless amount of items that I can purchase with that kind of money.

Thanks for correcting me!

It was a Yahoo! article after all.

These guys don't usually have to buy their toys. Nadal wears Richard Mille watches like actresses wear super-expensive jewelry at awards shows. On loan. The Mercedes-Benz cars Federer has for his personal use are owned by Mercedes-Benz Schweiz AG. The companies want the rest of the population to want these toys.

Well, I guess that wouldn't be too happy if they lose them..

Only a minuscule percentage of the population would ever have the chance to afford these toys.

Wasn't one of those watches stolen from Nadal?

It was?

I never knew about that.

The thief probably won't get much for the watch as it is stolen...

Yep. The barman that worked for the hotel Nadal was staying at last year at RG, went into his room while he was sleeping and stole it off the nightstand. They arrested the guy that took it and he told where he had hidden it and gave it back to them.

Nadal also lost another one of these watches in Toronto in 2010. They never found that one.

Yep, and that's how they caught the guy who did it. He made an unauthorized entry into the room with his key card.

What that means is that you can wear the watch while playing sports and it will survive the impact of a tennis racket or a golf club, or a 1-meter drop onto concrete. Let's say you get hit by a ball on the wrist and the ball breaks the pin that holds the band onto the case and your watch goes flying onto the hardcourt. Nice to know that your nice expensive watch isn't totaled.

You don't have to spend $500K for that type of shock resistance in a mechanical watch. Sergio's watch will do it too (all Omegas can take 5,000 Gs).

Or you could just buy a digital Casio G-shock and leave your nicer watches at home when playing tennis or golf.

Oh, so it's one of those durable watches?
First of all, I wouldn't be wearing a watch while playing in the first place!

There's a "Rolex" clock on the far side of the court during matches to display time.

You'd be surprised how many people are "aspirational" buyers. Companies like Richard Mille need only a few people to believe the hype.

Louis Vuitton is not really high-quality, there are other brands which make better-quality leather goods. Louis Vuitton is a diffusion brand peddling high-margin trinkets like perfumes and small clutch purses aimed at aspirational buyers, and don't be surprised if a good amount of their sales are of their lower-priced items. They offer pricier items for the image it gives the brand, not because they expect to sell many of the pricier items. Stores carry really high-ticket items not because they expect people to buy them, but because just having a really high-ticket item boosts the image of everything else they sell in people's minds.

Richard Mille watches and Mercedes-Benz cars, could appeal to the retired or middle-age guy who fancies himself successful and in need of a toy he is told is the best in its category and believes what he hears, without doing anything to verify what he hears.

FUN FACT: Louis Vuitton is the most counterfeited brand of all time.

That's a funny thing: He trew that watch to the crowd in São Paulo. He thought that was his wristbands! hahaha. But unfortunately, he didn't trew with much power, so it laid back on the court.

This watch is only 19g. That's very, very light. But I wouldn't use it, it's not my kind of watch. I'd rather a more conservative style of watch.
